Redundancy Rant!

[Rant] I have been working for a company in London for about 2 years. So about 5 months ago myself and the two other guys on my team are told that there will be redundancies.

About 2 months later we where told that I would be kept on as I was the most senior and qualified but that the two other guys will be losing there jobs. I was sad at the fact that my mates would be losing their jobs but relieved that I would be kept on.

A month later I get called into a meeting and am told that I will now be made redundant as well and that it will accrue after the Christmas holidays with the exact date to be confirmed soon. This didn’t piss me off too much as the company I worked for is really not doing well at the moment (it’s in the building trade and involved in the buying developing and revaluation of houses). So I think about my options and decide Id like to go travelling and that I need to try and save as much as I can.

I keep asking for more information as we never received anything in writing at the meeting.

Then 2 weeks ago I get called into yet another meeting and am told that I will now be finishing on the 14th of December. I was pissed off as I had made all my arrangements around the fact that I would be leaving after Christmas. The guy who had the meeting with me (who isn’t my direct boss but has had his job title recently changed to Head of Operations) is a nice enough guy and explained that they just couldn’t justify me staying on till after the 14th with the workload they had. I begrudgingly accepted this and set about adjusting my plans to the new date.

Just yesterday I was called into the boardroom to talk to the Director of the company and the HR manager who had been present at all the other meetings. Prior to this meeting on the same day my two colleagues had meetings with the Director and the HR manager and they where given their letters of redundancy confirming their last day as the 2nd of December. The director gave me mine in the meeting and I noticed that the 2nd was the date on mine too!

Now I was really mad as I fell they had been fcuking about with me and stringing me along. When I said that I was told that I would be finishing on the 14th and that I have made arrangements around that date the stupid F##king cow from HR says she doesn’t remember it being said at all. I am not good at hiding how I feel and the director could see I was realy angry and asked to give them 5 min.

I sat back down at my desk and I felt like steam was coming out of my ears. I was eventual called back in and told that I would be kept on till the 19th. I said thank you (in a way I hope didn’t sound thankful at all) and walked back out. The thing is even though I will get added days I still have to rearrange all my plans. I am seriously considering telling them to just go **** themselves and walking out. If I didn’t need the money! [/Rant]

That felt surprisingly therapeutic to type…

Still want to jam a fork in that HR bitches eye though!

    I don't condone violence, but I agree.
    Silly bitch.
    I hate bitches like her.
Ditch the table fork for a pitch fork.
Just noticed there's a lot of "itch"es in my post.
    Ditch, bitch, pitch.....

On your last day, stink-bomb their asses :D!

    (is this punishable by law?)

This is why I hate modern business, they treat staff like ****. Tell the stupid bitch from HR exactly what you think of her and threaten to blackmail your boss if you don't get a glowing reference.

So you don't need the money but you kicked up a fuss about them letting you go earlier?
If you don't need the money then why does it matter if they let you go earlier than previously stated? Surely you'd prefer to get the time off?

You weren't very good at your job. Its you own fault.

I know it was long but your not getting the point.

I do need the money I’m not kicking up a fuss about staying on its the fact they keep changing my last day I cant plan anything if I don’t know when I’m leaving.

My job will no longer exist within the company that’s what redundancy is I'm not being fired. My whole department is closing it’s got noting to do with how good at my job I am.

I can understand why you're so annoyed but make sure that you leave the employers on good terms. You never know when you'll need areference or what opportunities might come out of your redundancy.

and I'm sure your reference will support that:rolleyes::rolleyes:

On your last day go down the market and buy a flatfish. Tape it to the underside of the HR bitch's desk, or somewhere else it will never be found. You won't be around to endure the smell, but it will give you the satisfaction of knowing you fcuked her over. Revenge is sweet my friend!

I always thought HR people are suppoesd to be nice, caring loving people, but in reality they are just the managers pitbulls, cocking their legs on employees as and when they feel like it.

**** news about the job by the way, hope it goes well for you. Just console yourself with the fact that once this bitch has gone around ****ing everyone around, she will most probably be made redundant as well.

Sad thing is we had a really nice HR woman who would do her best for you but she quit because of the way management dealt with the first lot of redundancies we had here about a year ago. In fact I believe she may be taking them to tribunal over it or something. The new one is ****.

I think every HR dept. in the country is exactly the same. Warm and fuzzy on the outside, but a vagina that consumes human beings on the inside

Glad to hear you got up until the 19th at least OP
Still sucks to be laid off before xmas

Actually I'd go with the old prawns in the base unit of the pc. The heat in there wil make them rancid in no time and the fan will eject the smell all around her office! Her caks probably smell like that already anyway. Feel your pain man! All the best for the future. ;)

A few years ago I worked for a big UK company and was their engineering director, which made me responsible for the company's workforce. We had an HR departemnt of one, but I wouldn't let him near the staff. I restricted him to advising on employment law etc. If someone had to be sacked or made redundant, I did it, and I went to lengths to explain to the employee why it was happening. In the case of redundancy I then made myself availble to him/her to help them get another job. The HR guy didn't do that because he didn't have the contacts or the knowledge of the industry. Therefore I am not a fan of HR departments, which I consider to be a waste of space in most cases.

Just wait till your last day and take a dump on your bosses desk.

That'll learn him for going through an economic crisis.

Just piss in the kettle beside HR's coffee dock.

I wouldn't of thought you'd need the money that much if you're able to spend it on travelling. I'd have more sympathy if you were one of the many about to lose their homes after being made redundent. It sucks that you were made redudent and it's annoying that they messed up the dates. But be thankful that you got some warning and move on.

Meh, depends on the business. Theres good and bad same as there always was. I have a severe distaste for HR people though - managers of departments should interview and hire people themselves, regardless of how busy they are, since they will be working with them and know best what they need; thats how I run my show anyway. HR should be shelved from most places.
