Just received my 'Nikon for OM' adapter from HongKong.
ie. it (hopefully) lets me mount (old prime) Nikon F/Nikkor lens on my Olympus.
So......anyone selling their old Nikon lenses ?;)

Nikon to OM or Nikon to 4/3??

If it's the latter I want to know how you get on, if the former, don't make the mistake of picking up an AF lens!

As it says on the packet: Nikon / for OM (four thirds)
    mmmmm.....did I get the right one ?
I want to know how you get on
Will do. Well, I have to get some lenses first !

    Interesting articles here: http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/quest/q08.html

Why Nikon lenses though?? I know there's plenty of them and all, but you can pick up plenty of OM lenses and get an OM to 4/3 adaptor for cheap too.

I've a bunch of OM lenses and an adaptor myself :) I've also got 2 OM cameras though!

Wrotniak is pretty good, there is also some good info if you search here for legacy glass http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1022 a lot of people have modified old minolta lenses for use without an adaptor. Mostly the Rokkor 40mm F1.8 or the Rokkor 58 F1.2 I think.

I saw some cheap fast primes ones on eBay.

Do you use OM lenses on a D-SLR (E-series) camera? How are the results ?

mmmmm......interesting, a friend of mine uses old Minolta lenses on his Minolta X500/X700 or X300 (can't remember which), would these fit my E510 or do these need an adaptor ?

    Hiya,
The OM primes are great quality and the most basic the 50mm F1.8 can be got really cheaply. I use then on an E-410 from time to time. Focus is difficult until I install a split screen and the results are mixed. As I can't always tell if things are in focus.

I've a folder full of gig shots taken with that combo on http://pix.ie/duffarama and look for the dEUS folder.

As for the Minolta lenses, they're old manual focus lenses. They're all called Rokkor's as well. The 40mm f1.8 is a popular one and easy to convert. I don't knwo enough about minolta cameras to know if your mates lenses will work!

if your mates lenses will work!
I'll ask him, when he's in a good mood, ie. asking a FILM guy to see if their lenses would work on a Digital is fraught with danger.......ho ho :) ie. insulting, to him & the Film lens !

Anyways, I got a Pentax M 50mm 1.7 lens today, so I'll compare it to my Centon 50mm 1.7, its old (and in great nick) but well built.
I'm on the lookout for Nikon's aswell, for investigative purposes ! ;)
The OM primes are great quality
Have you any recommendations on old Oly OM lenses ? ie. maybe a telephoto prime ?

PS. I hear the Oly OM 50mm 1.4 is a great lens, would you know where I might get one, or any OM lens, I see a few on eBay.

Why would I recommend lenses when we'll end up bidding against one another on Ebay?!!

Ah no, the 50 f1.4 is a great lens, on an OM camera. On the E-system bodies apparently it isn't so good. Too soft until you hit f4. There is a list of recommended f stops for those lenses online somewhere...

I'd start with the 50mm f1.8 and then look at others. The 35mm f2.8 is a cracking little lens. The 28mm f3.5 is also very good. You should be able to get all three of those off ebay for <€150

...we'll end up bidding against one another on Ebay?!!
Aha, your the little gobsheen that keeps putting 6 bids in at the last second......he he he :)
Its amazing tho, I bid on a few items recently (I'm an eBay newbee) and the amount of bids coming in the last 10 sec is amazing, but thats eBay I guess, so......New rule: if you haven't made a bid on an item with an hour to go, you can't make any bid !!

Yeah thats just the nature of the beast. People snipe at the last second, normally using automated bidding services. I used to get all competitive about this, which is of course what Ebay relies on. Nowadays I just put the one bid in, which is what I'm willing to pay for the item, and then check back whenever the auction is over. If I've won it then well and good. If not, then I would have had to bid more than I was willing to pay for it to get it had I been watching the auction. Sometimes the temptation to stick on that one ... more .... €10 ... can get irresistible ...

On the matter at hand though. Have you actually gotten results off this yet Morrisseeee ? IE stuck an F-Mount lens onto your olympus and taken a few shots ? I can't quite work out from the thread if you're still trying to get a lens or not :D

Yeah, thats exactly my plan, hope I stick to it....
    trying to get a lens
Yep, I'm still on the look out, I'm busy at work at the mo, ahem, so when I get some free time I'll do some snooping ! The adapter mounts OK on the E510 but it doesn't work until something is attached to it unfortunatley !

I wonder if it's to do with the throat size on the Olympus? I know that Canon lenses are larger than Nikon at the back. I have an adapter that lets me put Nikon lenses on a Canon, but not the other way around.

Everything is manual though as the contacts are blocked by the metal adapter,

I've an E410 as well as a few Old OMs and I've got decent results using the OM lenses with the adaptor on the digital. Most of my stuff I've picked up in the last year on Ebay. Prior to that I only had the standard 50mm f1.8 and 135mm Zuiko lenses and from oother manufacturers.

Oddly enough it was my purchasing of the digital and then getting the adaptor that started me on looking up Ebay. That's how I ended up with an OM1 and an OM2 to go with my old OM10s.

I still haven't ruled out picking up an OM4....

OK my new-ish Nikon (ahem cough cough) lens arrived yesterday and here are the results, well just one or two photos from last nite.

Neat. I presume you have to meter in stop down mode ? when you stop it down does the metering actually work correctly ? Does the aperture actually work in auto ? I'm presuming not, ie, when you turn the aperture ring the lens stops down to whatever you want, you meter and take the shot, as opposed to the lens stopping down automatically when the shutter button is pressed).

What about AF confirmation, does that work ? or are you strictly into guesstimation territory ?

Results look good though I have to say.

I use mine in aperture priority mode and manual focus.
The camera meters correctly but has no clue as to the aperture, with the OM adaptor for OM lenses it stops down the aperture as you turn the aperture ring.

    Yep, everything is manual.
Metering: different lenses differ slightly, ie. some need -0.7 whereas others might need +0.3 EV to be seen at their best, guesstimation/trial-n-error !
I also take advantage of the LiveView mode where I can also use the *7 or *10 zoom to see if my subject is in pristine sharpness. If you can't get a sharp pic with this method, then you just are not going to get that quality shot at this setting/aperture etc. Obviously this wouldn't be easy in certain situations, like taking pics of a band playing in a concert!
PS. I think this Nikon lens is quite sharp, or at least that little bit sharper than my Hannimex at F2.8 but then the Nikon is at F3.5, so....
