Have you bought one?

    Hey Guys,
I'm looking to buy two things for the camera but not exactly sure what I need. I want to be able to remotely shoot the camera (can't be a cord) while also using an external flash (580exII). So I'm guessing I need one transmitter/remote for my hand to the camera and then one for the camera to flash?

If anybody knows of any cheap alternatives could you post/pm me them?

    Many thanks!
    Kyle

I have optical release that is being triggered by the flash of the in-built flash and Cactus II radio remote - only triggers the flash, no information transmitted.

So if I was to buy just two of the Cactus II radio remote, put them on the same channel, it should do the trick for me?

Thanks for the quick reply ThOnda!

You have three options that I know of

    1. Pocket Wizard ~ €300

    2. CyberSync ~ €100

    3. Cactus Trigger ~ €30

I have the cactus trigger and it does what it says on the tin. I've used them up to 30 feet away and they work with no problems. They do mis fire on occasion, maybe once every 20 shots but for €30 you can't really complain.

The Cybersync seem to get mixed reviews and the Wizards are just plain ol expensive!

Google and Flickr is your friend here.

You need one transmitter, and then you need a receiver for each flash attached. They will all sync-flash together when you press the shutter.

Exactly. You can select one of four channels (frequencies) and every release in range that gets the signal would trigger.

You can get a radio remote to trigger the camera shutter on the Bay. I have one that works in my front garden while I'm sat about 20 metres away indoors - fires every time (so far).

One minor problem is that my receiver sits in the hotshoe on the camera so it occupies the space that a flash trigger would sit. It doesn't need to sit there, they just designed it that way (it doesn't have any contacts so could just hang down).

Optical flash slaves are fine if you're ok with the built-in flash firing and if the slave flash(es) sit in visual range of the camera. I only use them for fill flash in the studio where there's a hefty blast of light from different directions - I'd recommend a radio trigger for off-camera flash in general conditions.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm trying to keep this cheap and cheerful as it's only a bit of fun.

So would I be right in saying that if I got one of these and this lad. The first remote would set off the trigger, the second would then be connected to the camera through the hot shoe and flash the external also?

It might sound stupid asking but I'd prefer to be sure then out of 30/60bucks.

    Thanks again!

Nope. All you need is the second one from gadget infinity. That contains a transmitter that goes onto your cameras hotshoe and a receiver which connects to your flash.

You can then buy extra receivers seperately.

If you're around the west dublin/kildare area tomorrow I can show you.

Edit: Just noticed what you meant!! The first one you linked to will actuate the camera shutter and take a photograph. The gadget infinity set will activate the flash.

Thanks for the reply Ballyman, I was under the impression the wireless flash trigger would only trigger the flash, I'd still need to press the shutter myself. I want to be able to have a remote flash AND be able to remotely press the shutter...

EDIT: Just saw your edit. Thanks :)
