    Elvis Presley by a mile.

    I laughed!
Since Sir Hungus took David Bowie, i'll have to go with Eric Clapton.

Robert Plant/Jimmy Page, Bob Dylan, Mike Patton, Tony Iommi, Bruce Dickinson/ Steve Harris, "Weird Al" Yankovic (without him, nobody in music would have a sence of humor), Kerry King, blah blah blah...

What about Kraftwerk? I'm not an expert on their music but their achievements and infuence were huge.

Other than that Bowie, McCartney, Jimmy Page, Chuck Berry and Grandmaster Flash.

He's not the most important musician to me, that would be Thom Yorke or Mark Knopfler; but he's certainly shaped music.

Dylan, Bowie, Brian Wilson. Some suggest McCartney, but the quality of his work has been inconsistent at times, and dead dodgy at others.

    Little Richard.

Bruce Springsteen, but don't tell anyone.........a very cynical friend of mine who likes all music from Clash to Crosby Stills went to the RDS last summer and said it was 'the best rock concert I've ever been at'. He only went because of the hype.

Personally I think it's better that some people don't get it, makes it simpler for fans. I don't want to ram it down people's throats. Anyone who has seen him in concert will have the same opinion.

He's the most important to me, but I doubt he is to music - I mean, would rock be appreciably worse off without him?

Robert Plant/Jimmy Page, Bob Dylan, Brian wilson ,McCartney ,Bowie ,Stevie wonder ,Mary wilson Clapton CSNY, Taylor ,Mcguinn etc .

It's because of these people and quite a few more i am still in love with music today, as i was when i could first walk, and when i first heard them .:)

see your point, depends how the original question is interpreted i suppose, but he remains still alive, a music legend and very important.

Al Green's on now - real class.

edit: ooops - completely wrong forum!

David Bowie, John Fogerty, Chuck Berry, Paul McCartney... most other names I'd bother to mention have already been said.

Out of everyone I'd go with Bowie as most important still alive not just because of his own fantastic output but also other projects he had involvment with. Notably the two albums he produced with Iggy Pop, Transformer with Lou Reed, and his musical influence on others.

Brian Wilson all the way for me.

Don't think there's been any women mentioned yet, so i'll throw in Joni Mitchell and Patti Smith.
