    Hi,

I was just would anybody be able to confirm the whereabouts of this car and if it is still on the road? Apparently it was the Lord Mayor's car in 1988 and registered '1000' to celebrate Dublin's Millennium.

I have no connections with the car by the way, I'm just interested to know if it's still around (which I'd say is highly unlikely).

If you pay €20 on Cartell, it'll tell you if it's still on the road or not.

Id bet theres some guy out there who knows its provenance that has it tucked away somewhere!!A mid 80s 7series would be an unusual enough car in its own right.

I wouldn't be bothered paying that shower to find out information that should be provided for free.

I heard the car was last seen around 2001 in an independent dealers on the Naas Road so I'd say it's highly unlikely it's still around now.:( It's a pity really, as I feel a car with a history like that should be preserved.

As you can probably guess I have a big interest in Lord Mayor's cars, especially the Volvo's.

I agree that a car such as '88-D-1000' should be preserved. Its unfortunate that we still dont have a national motor museum where such cars could be preserved and displayed to the public.

Likewise such historic cars as 'IO 1' (Kildare's first reg) - the ex-Irish Motor Museum (Killarney) 1907 Silver Stream which was recently sold (by UK auction) to a private Irish buyer. This car is the only one of its kind ever built ..and if ever an Irish car deserved to be bought by the state ...this is it! (Its just fortunate that an Irish buyer bought it..so at leat it's still in the country!)

    Back to mayoral cars.....

I spotted '03-L-1' (Saab 95) in Gorey last week.
    A former mayoral car?

As far as I know (but i'm open to correction and usually am) Dublin and Cork are the only one's where 1 is used for a lord mayor

Most "KK 1" regs are/were JJ Kavanagh buses.... and neighbouring counties as well.

    ... e.g. 08 KK 1 is a Kassbohrer Setra.

    Just checked my files...

Dublin, Cork, Limerick (City) and Waterford (City) all reserve the first number each year for their respective mayoral cars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,107 ✭✭✭hi5

THE "1" registration is for "Lord" Mayors only, the cities mentioned have Lord Mayors, the rest are just bog standard Mayors.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Its true we in Waterford have a mere Mayor but he does have a "1" registered car.

Oddly enough, i can remember seeing buses with KK-1. Always wondering why the mayor got a bus, and ours got a f3cking Prius :P

It's L-1 for limerick as well. As far as i know anyone can get LK-1

That particular car used to live around my area. I've actually seen a few SAAB 9-5's with the 'L-1' reg, although I can't confirm whether they are ex. Lord Mayor or not.

Speaking of 'D-1' registered Lord Mayor Volvo's. I did a few reg checks on them when Cartell had just launched and was free, and I'd say 40% of the Volvo 700/900 series from 1990-98 were scrapped.

I think it is quite bad the way that Ireland we don't have any sentimental value for cars who's history have a certain significance.

Interesting to note that the first car registered in Dublin under the current reg. plate system back in 1987 was a Peugeot 205!

    Registration 87D1
    Make PEUGEOT
    Model 205
    Description XL 1.0
    Fuel Type PETROL

The Lord Mayor's cars didn't have a registration ending with '1' until 1990 afaik.

Yep,it used to be first come first served, then they got wise to what a money making racket it could be.Wonder is that 205 about, its a kind of historical number, first of the new series.

It's not. I typed in the reg of that particular car and it is gone around 9 years or so.

Into cartell?Did you pay the fee to find out?

It was the Merlin Car Auctions entry form. It used to tell you when the car was last taxed and I think it said something like February 2000 which means it probably most definitely is scrapped.

He definately had at least one Saab 9-5 - wouldn't be surprised if he got a new one every year. I recall the Limerick Post mentioning his new cars, probably mainly to advertise Clareview Motors (local Saab dealer).

Also, I used to regularly see around Limerick a Carina II hatchback with 92-C-1 - might have been a taxi for a while too

I used to live near a former Limerick mayor (Dick Sadlier 1995) and I remember that exact car in his driveway. Yes, mayor in Limerick always gets L 1

Are you sure? I always thought the Lord Mayor of Cork always got a Ford Granada Scorpio's up until they were replaced by top spec Mondeo's when the Scorpio finished production.

92-C-1 shows up as this on cartell:

    Registration 92C1
    Make FORD
    Model GRANADA
    Description 2.0 I GHIA X
    Fuel Type PETROL

I'm surprised it's still on the road to be honest. You usually find that for some reason Ford's have a very short lifespan compared to other cars. I wouldn't say it is down to the quality of the cars, it's just Ford seem to have a 'throw it away after 10 years or less' image. You will find cars such as the Mk2 Mondeo which were produced from '97-00 getting scarce already.

If you could get a picture it would be much appreciated, I'd be interested to see it and the present state it's in.

Well most of them rusted away into nothing.

Even my '95 Escort is fairly rare nowadays of that vintage.

Will do my best to get a pic,the guy that owns it is sound,he used to fill the fag machine in my local as a sideline, often got talking to him.
You are right about the ford thing,mk1 mondeos are becoming quite scarce these days,i found myself looking at a clean 93 one the other day and realising i hadnt seen one for ages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

Agree re old Fords ...although I did spot a very straight 90-WX reg Escort recently in use by a elderly gentleman.

Also know of a local gent who has c.8 Granada's lined up at the rear of his crumbling country house. You can see the progression of cars he has owned over the years ...reg plates read 'ZS ####', 90-WX, 92-D, 94-D, etc etc. He currently drives a 98 Scorpio estate.

Wickow Mayors don't get '1' plates ....07-WW-1 is on a Ford Transit!;)

Wonder will this all change now that cherished plates cost €1000 (instead of €315) ??

There's a old Sierra 90-D in white going around as a taxi in Dublin. Oh she's a 2.0 Ghia too.

Fords last as long as any other car, but like most "proletarian" marques they generally fall victim to fashion before rust or mechanical failure.

I have a 1995 mondeo with 210k miles, and no rust to speak of. It is still on the original clutch (despite my two sisters learning to drive in it). Owners, not the cars are the problem. It has never had an expensive breakdown... in fact, it has never had to be towed nor did it fail to start.

Must have been something else. Thought it was very unusual whatever it was...

Also, regarding Fords, Fiestas seem to be exempt from this trend. There's still loads of late '90s Fiestas on the road. I have a '98, there's still a lot of Mk. III's around (then again I live in student country), there's an '88 around the corner from me (still see the odd other Mk. II's around), and I knew someone in college who was driving an '83 Mk. I up until a couple of years ago. Also, there's a late Sierra hatchback in pretty good shape not too far away from me.

Funny that given the Fiesta Mk3 rusted nearly as bad as an Austin Metro.

Yeah I doubt there's any rust free examples around - the corners of the rear doors are starting to rust on mine. Dagenham quality steel :pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,461 ✭✭✭Max_Damage

Saying that, my '95 Escort has no rust on it whatsoever. In fact, the bodywork is in very good condition. Maybe their steel improved by then.

(Yet another thread that's veered completely off topic! :D)
