Correcting peoples grammar

How often do you do this? Like "It's not 'plug out the plug' it's 'unplug the plug'" or "You mean 'May I?, not "Can I?'"

Or on the Internet. "It's 'could have' not 'could of'"

Would you walk up to a complete stranger and correct their grammar?

No ,their spelling on the other hand............................

Ah, you see that was my second question. Would you correct their spelling? But I didn't want to ask outright so I cleverly made the mistake on purpose.

I'd better fix it now though, because no-one's answering the first question.

Me? Heck no. I just wonder if people do it.

How about if you were on a bus and heard someone say into their phone "Yeah, I'm stuck here at the office. Have to go, there's a fax coming in." Would you expose them?

    Bad grammar don't bother me...

Inappropriate use of words do, for some reason, though I usually hold my tongue I have to cringe internally... examples include "irregardless", "ironic", "infer"... even worse are buzzwords/clichés... "Does exactly what it says on the tin"...

    :eek::eek::eek::eek: / oh , I get you now....

There is a bit of a minx in my personality so it would depend if l could work out by the persons tone and body language who they might be lying to.
If l thought it was their OH I might lean across and say where I was heading and if they could tell me when the bus is near my stop.:P

In speech no. Not at all. The one that ticks me off is adding an H to the end of the word height. It's not heightH people. In writing no, but it does tick me off.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

GRRRR I hate the misuse of the word irony. Makes me want to punch the person saying it in their face. That'd be ironic (not really, obviously)

Unfortunately people don't seem to like it though... :(

There is no correct spelling of any word. There is no correct grammer. Where did you get these concepts from. Before you site a book or dictionary or something, who wrote that book? What qualifies them to dictate to anyone how to struture a sentence or spell a word? How is their subjective interpretation of the patterns and modes of language any more valid than anyone elses?
Suggest you read up on Wittgenstein's ideas on the relativity of language.

I would consider it incredibly rude to correct someone's grammar. What right do I have?
Bad grammar does get on my nerves, but I'd never correct it for someone. It's not my place to educate them.
I work with someone who always uses the word 'revert', in completely the wrong way in e-mails (please revert back to me). It really gets on my wick, but there's no way I'd say anything. Again, it's not my place.

I can't see anything wrong with what he said. I'm fairly sure his use of the contraction "thread's" is fine.
Is this what you are referring to as ironic?

Terrible grammar is as bad as text speak at times. Slightly wrong grammar on the other hand is fine on the interweb. I could never be accused of having perfect grammar, but I generally have posts that are readable, and that is all I would like from other posters. Leaving out the odd apostrophe is not a capital offence.

I'd never really think about correcting someone's grammar verbally -- it's usually not worth it. It does, however, drive me absolutely batty when I see careless written mistakes; I think my #1 (grammatical) pet peeve is when someone doesn't write the correct form of your/you're or they're/their/there. I'll only point it out if I don't think anyone will be offended!

    If I had a dollar for every time I caught/corrected one of those mistakes . . . :(

i hav 2 admit dat bad grammar & spelling does irritate me in written text i would never correct a persons grammar if i overheard dem or even if i was conversing wit dem - i tink it wud b xtremely rude & condescending i wud however certainly correct my kids if they spoke improperly thru laziness r in an affected way bcoz dey thought it was cool but only from an educational pov ive absolutely no probs wit regional dialects r slang when spoken indeed i tink its gr8 from both a cultural & anthropological standpoint when reading though i find it maddening especially on boards when ppl consistently neglect 2 use punctuation capital letters where appropriate paragraphs etc the reason we post here is 2 either contribute 2 a discussion or ask for advice/opinions its not fair 2 inflict incoherent text on ppl & genuinely xpect ppl 2 read thru it so much tone & inflection is lost from language wen we write it down and its important 2 use tools like punctuation & even italics & bold 2 convey our message as clearly & as close as possible & 2 wat we r trying 2 say i dont mind de odd typo r grammatical error we all make mistakes but consistent bad grammar & spelling as a result of laziness is f*cking maddening i also find txtspk in sms messages annoying fair enuf if u r trying 2 stay within the 160 character limit but when u can use proper spelling and grammar and convey your message within the limit why not use it  if i had my way posts containing txtspk lack of paragraphs lack or punctuation etc wud b an immediate infraction from a moderator :D

I have to admit that bad grammar and spelling does irritate me in written text. I would never correct a person's grammar if I overheard them or even if I was conversing with them - I think it would be extremely rude and condescending. I would, however, certainly correct my children if they spoke improperly through laziness or in an affected way because they thought it was cool, but only from an educational point of view.

I've absolutely no problem with regional dialects or slang when spoken, indeed I think it's great from both a cultural and anthropological standpoint. When reading though, I find it maddening (especially on boards) when people consistently neglect to use punctuation, capital letters where appropriate, paragraphs, etc.

The reason we post here is to either contribute to a discussion, or ask for advice/opinions. It's not fair to inflict incoherent text on people and genuinely expect people to read through it. So much tone and inflection is lost from language when we write it down, and it's important to use tools like punctuation and even italics and bold to convey our message as clearly and as close as possible and to what we are trying to say. I don't mind the odd typo or grammatical error, we all make mistakes, but consistent bad grammar and spelling as a result of laziness if f*cking maddening!

I also find txtspk in SMS messages annoying; fair enough if you are trying to stay within the 160 character limit, but when you can use proper spelling and grammar and convey your message within the limit, why not use it!?

If I had my way, posts containing txtspk, lack of paragraphs, lack of punctuation etc would be an immediate infraction from a moderator!:D

Mixing up "your" and "you're"; "there", "their" and "they're"; and the ultimate clanger: "you should of went"... all should be criminalised IMO.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

I've said it before, but I hate when somebody makes an otherwise inoffensive or well-intentioned OP with a minor grammatical error, and somebody highlights their mistake to a predictable fools-chorus of thanks.

That said, I'll occasionally correct people who are acting the twat (or taking the p*ss) just to wind them up.

People who really do make zero effort, or worse still, text-speak, do my head in though.

I'm currently on a mission to correct the people in my office on the correct use of "revert".

I do it once in a while on the net when I really can't restrain myself - bad spelling and grammar annoy me. It's just when it's obvious the person in question actually doesn't know they're making a mistake that it gets to me, so I suppose you could say it's the lack of knowledge more than anything else.
The worst are confusing been/being and "should of".
