    Hi folks,

I just did DM 08 and the next goal is Connemarathon 09. If I were to start an 18 week program, that would kick off Nov 17th. Is that what ye do going from 1 marathon to another or how do ye alter the programs? I'll try to get back to the gym/pool over the next while also to work on my core etc.

    Thanks!

In the past I always just rested between programs, maybe did the odd bit to stay roughly in shape but nothing too intense. This year I only took a week off and I am aiming at a 10k PB over Xmas before my next program.

What 18 week plan were you looking at?

as amadeus said it depends what programme you did for dublin and what programme you are looking to do.
if it was a hal higdon programme you could move up to the next on , there are 2 programmes for each beginner, intermediate or advanced
im on a programme for connemara already i find it suits me to start another training plan after a short rest but this will not suit everyone

I'm a novice marathoner too, also considering a Spring marathon and was wondering the exact same thing.

Looking at my level of fitness post BAC marathon (yours too probably) and taking into account a few weeks training for the 10k I think that I'd be able to take 6 weeks off the HH 18 week training schedule.

I will still be able to run 12-15 miles with reasonable ease so I'll probably start the programme from week 7-8 as I still intend to do the same weekly mileage (post Dec 10K) that I was doing during my marathon training so the only difference will be my LSR and some speedwork.

I'm planning on fitting some series conditioning work in before Connemara I probably won't really start training, running wise, for Connemara till late December, will be doing a couple of runs a week, the main concentration for me will be on the conditioning though. I do cycle to and from work every day though which will help me maintain my fitness big time anyway.

I find it hard to stick to those structured programmes though and then just get depressed when a run that was meant to be 14 miles turns into a ten miler or something, was planning on following a 18/19 week plan for Connemara but in reality I know I'll never follow it.

I trained for Dublin using the Novice 1 program. I guess I could cut it/alter it so that there is more focus on conditioning for the first 6 weeks or so. Novice 2 only has 25 extra miles in it. Still for connemara Id be more concerned with my core strength and my hill training I think. Its all Hal Higdon's programs Iv been looking at. I like/need the structure of a program so I can plan my weeks training and make it part of my daily routine, otherwise it may not happen.

My other concern is when to run. Do ye make a conscious effort to run in the mornings when it is bright? I need to try and plan when everything is going to happen, so I can see whether its possible to fit in everything. Its all about planning!!! ;)

Marie, I swim on and off but I find to build up the core muscles, back etc. exercises like sit ups, stomach crunches, side raises , press ups are far better and can be done at home. Also pick up a small trampoline great for the core
A good 15 minute session would be.
3 mins warm up on trampoline
10 pressups (using the edge of the trampoline if you want)
    25 stomach crunches
30 secs x 2 side raises (basically balancing on your arm with hips and knees off the floor while facing side ways)

    x3
increasing pace on trampoline (incorporating hip rotations , leg movements etc)
