Thought I would share this with you lot in case it comes in handy for anyone.

A learned-Mac person who was recently suffering from annoying inexplicable Mac-itis cured his sick iMac by completing the following procedure. He was nice enough to write it down so I thought I may as well post it here in case it helps anyone else.

This deals with either or both of two problems on the iMac Intel 7.1 or greater
    1. Flickering screen
    2. Full fan
    3. Odds and ends of problems related to power operations on the iMac
    • A - Turn off the computer using software if possible - otherwise use power button
    • B - Unplug ALL cables including the POWER cable. Wait 10 seconds.

Use one or both of the following:
    • C1 optional: while pressing the power BUTTON, insert the power cable. Release the power button. Wait 10 seconds and press power button again to restart.
      Replace the other cables.
    • C2 optional: if the problem persists - mainly the fan running high - pull out all the cables including the power cable. With the cables still out, press the power button for 30 seconds.
Replace cables and restart with power button.

This process may sort other problems related to the SMU - System Management Unit or Power Management Units in these iMacs.
