Receiving payment/acknowledgment for my work

I received a recent email from someone working for an ad agency in Ireland asking if they could use one of my shots on flickr in an ad campaign. They specifically asked if they could buy the rights to my photo or if I could grant them permission to use it.

I'm not really interested in the money (I wouldn't even know how much to ask for) but I would be interested in receiving acknowledgment for my work in that ad campaign. I'm sure some of you have had a similar experience. What did you do? Sell up? Demand acknowledgment? Something else?

I'm not here seeking legal advice just looking at what others have done in the past or at least other resources online I could read up on. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Well, you're not going to get much credit from an ad campaign, if you ask your name to be shown on each ad, they're going to say no - Go for the money and get yourself someting you've wanted.

You can always put the shot and the fully edited shot into your portfolio.

Have to agree. In general, images used in ads don't have credit. So, you're much better off finding the going rate for your image and charge them. Buy yourself some new lenses/camera etc.

A post I found interesting and a bit comical - in relation to not getting paid for images - http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1014&message=29838250

to what end? go for the money, it's not a charity (i assume) you'll be helping. essentially, someone else would be making money off you.

Excellent points. Capitalism seems the way to go. Any idea how much I should be charging? Or even a link to a website that shows photos for sale (where you buy the rights to those photos outright) ? Thanks.

Koloth ...did you ask what kind of Ad campaign they want to use the shots for, what kind of rights are they looking for ?

Do they basically want to pay you and use the shots and retain all rights (including selling rights) - is it for a magazine advert/TV Advert, online advert, poster (one of those huge ones) ......is the advert local, national or even international...... whatever price you think of ...add a zero and throw that figure at them, then you can negotiate - worst case they decide they dont want it after all (which could happen even if they pay you.)

Quick thing to remember ........ they dont have a time machine so cant go back and reproduce the exact conditions (lighting, clouds, wind etc) ....so if they want your shot they have to pay you for your image - you could agree a fee for use on the advert only and not for future publication

As for links to any sites that sell the rights - dont know of any - I know some sites that sell royalty free images, have a look at some of the international sites like Getty or reuters or stuff like that and see how much they charge for international rights of an image, contact agencies in Ireland (sportsfile, Inpho, Maxwells, Macgonagle, etc etc) .... ask them the same thing, say you saw an image of theirs and want to know can you use it for an advert (they will ask you the questions that you need to ask the people who contacted you...and you will find out the answers in the same way)......best of luck with it, hopefully you'll not be taken advantage of - although unless you are a PRO they wont treat you with respect.

Ask them what they are offering and what they wan to use the image for - then figure out how much your gear/time/travel/food/etc cost you that day and remind them that it cost you money to take the pic and if they want the rights then you may not be able to sell it afterwards.
