Some Advice on an appraisal...

Looking for a little advice here...

I started a grad programme back in July with a major Irish company. Now I had applied for the 'sales/marketing graduate programme' but seem to have been slotted into the 'distribution with a slight element of sales programme'. I'm not particularly happy with my position at the moment and definitely know this company has not gotten the best out of me so far and is unlikely to in the future since I have a lack an interest in the job.

I have my appraisal tomoro and know that a position in the marketing department is opening up in January, which I would have a real interest in. My degree is actually in marketing and I have one year operations experience in Ireland and 2 years working in OZ in business development so I'm not 'fresh off the boat' like some graduates. I only took this graduate programme as a way into the company as the competition is pretty fierce to get a job with them and they are paying for me to go back to study.

Now I want to request that I either get a transfer and at least be allowed to act as a support to the department so I can just gain some experience so if a position comes up in the future I'll be more likely to be considered for it.

But here's my problem, the particular brand/division of the company I am working for is suffering desperately with the credit crunch and have already let some people go and more are expected to follow. Its not going into liquidation by any standard just more of a tightening of the belt. My concern is that if I ask to be moved they'll think I'm not committed, no interest.. so let me go too, save money. So how would I approach this tomoro, letting my boss know I am committed but feel I was'nt neccessarily selected for the right programme and I feel I would be better suited to this other department.

Or should I just keep my mouth shut during these harsh economic times and ride out the next year or so and then push for a transfer?? Obviously I still want to have a job come tomoro afternoon!

    Thanks for any advice!

Perhaps talk to the manager of this department first and see how interested he is in having you, if you get positive vibes maybe then put in a formal request?
