You people who eat for 200 euros per month, how many times do you go to restaurant/month? I noticed Stuohy - who lived with a couple of friends - only spent 100/month, and as I understood it, he cooked his own food. How much does a meal at Bialin cost? How much at charcoal grill?

I'm just interested because 200 seems a lot to me - I'm not saying anyone is exaggerating, I don't think anybody are, I'm just suspecting you might not cook your own food everyday (and you definitely don't live on noodles;)).

no way in hell you can live of 100/m in this country. less than 25/w? for 7 days? he must be eating absolute sh*te or else be anorexic. A meal in the bialann would cost at least €4. same in the Charcoal.

Well, I don't know, maybe he's eating **** and is anorectic at the same time? Haha, or he just found a less expensive shop?:)

Okey, 4 euros... how much is normal/maximum?

If you eat for 5 euros/meal, two meals per day, that's totally 300 euros/month. If you eat for 4,5 euros/meal, 22 days per month (mon-fri), that's roughly 190. It appears that those who spend 200/month eat mostly at restaurants - they even eat their dinners at restaurants. Or, they could do for the same cost.

Or did I get it wrong?

Like I said before, I only have to cook once a week, which costs about a tenner, thats 4 days covered, the rest are generally pizza, spuds or pasta, nice and cheap stuff like that, 25 a week is well achievable!

I suppose I didn't include lunches in my costs, which'd be an extra 50 or so a month, going on a mix of homemade sandwiches and eating in college aswell (well, G&L or Ward's! :))

Okey. In Sweden, you'd have to pay 100 euros per month. That's a normal cost for perfectly normal food:) But on the other side, I'll get 1200-1300 in study loans on Ireland, while only getting 750 in Sweden (/month).

So, you cook one day per week, and who cooks the other days? Do you cook for all your friends?

I sent you a message in your guestbook btw, Stuohy. I'm online on the MSN if you want to chat:)

It appears so, "ads by google".

Well, the only costs that apply to me on that list is rent, food and whatever. That would be 1300 - slightly more than I have (with today's Euro/SEK exchange rate). How can food cost 600? Do you eat goose liver and drink champagne every day?;) Or did you include going out?

Yup, the 4 of us cook for each other, once a week (people go home at weekends). Its a great system, cos you can buy in bulk, which saves loads of cash.

I get it. Which student residence do you think is the best? Coirib, atlantis, centrepoint...? Are they worth their price? This might be off topic, but I feel I need to know it.

OK, well id say I eat pretty well most days. Lunch for me is a sandwiche, soup and drink, and sadly enough, this is also my breakfast. So already thats €25 for the 5 days im at college. Then dinner id say I spend on average the same each day. Thats about €50 a week, by 4 weeks. ~€200! I dont go to restaurants, maybe a takeaway once every forthnight.
On the weekends then I either go home to the mammy and daddy, or ive some manner of food from during the week left over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭Wendero

wow, seems like huge grocery costs. God, you would save money if you went to some restaurant it seems, if that's how much soup and a sandwiche costs:P Well, you can be happy you have your parents there - I won't.

Its a handsomly sized roll and a good portion of soup. If it keeps me going from morning till 6 or 7 in the evening then ill pay €5.
Where are these less then €5 a meal restaurants you speak of? You'd be lucky getting soup for €5 in a restaurant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭Wendero

Okey, well, it was just someone who said that the cheapest meal in Charchoal cost 4 euros, so I thought five was resonable.

And what's a roll? Stuohy eats rolls too, but what is it?:)

Rent is obviously going to be the biggest chunk of your weekly spend. I get by on about 100 a week between food and going out. I do'nt really keep track on where that goes with regard food, drink, stationary and the like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭Wendero

Okey, would you recommend living in a student residence? What student residence, if so?Should one rent with ensuite, twin, double, deluxe (like Atlantis offers)... ? I need a recommendation.

Keep away from Centrepoint, you be as well to commute from Sweden. Dunaras is very far too.

Go for Gort or Cuirt na Coirib.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭Wendero

Thanks for the advice. You mean it's far away from the university? Is that what you mean or did I get it wrong?

    Why gort/coirib? Just curious:)

they are pretty close compared with the others, just across the river. And they are also probably the best in terms of fittings and that.

Have to be on your toes living in the student residences though, some of the back entrances to the houses are in a CCTV blackspot and all kind of schenanigans goes on in them. Students robbing from each other and that.

Thought I was in the Galway City forum when i posted by breakdown.. I'm not a student anymore.. graduated from NUI there this year so my spendin is cause of job :P

6 months ago, finishing 3rd year, my breakdown was..

    350 rent,
400 for food, phone, drinking, going out.
    and no car.

its funny, i used to spend 750 a month and be happy. cause of a job, i spend 1900 a month now :o

the 600 you asked about is food and going out at the weekends.. 150 a week standing order into a "spending" account. nice food after 3 years of bad food :)

Oh, now I get it. Well, spending 2000 euros/month isn't very bad - if you can afford it so you're not living on loans or something, which I assume you don't:) What are you working as?

Isn't it heavy traffic on the river? Can you walk from the student residence to NUIG?

On the river none what soever. On the Bridge over the river, thats a different story. It can be quite bad from 8.30am to 9.30am and then again in the evening from about 5- 7.

But back to this €4 charcoal grill dinner. I doubt the €4 dinner would fill me up. If I eat there ill generally spend between 6 and 7 euro.

A roll is a baguette, or a "french stick" as I heard one man once call it.

Damn straight! Centrepoint is miles away!

I live near Dún and if you get a bike, its no bother, walking is a pain though.

Few things which can keep costs down. How far is the nearest dunnes or tesco or big supervalue. I live out in westside beside the dunnes and although its a pain to walk into college, i save alot of cash by making big shops instead of buying small amounts each day in smaller shops.

always look for specials, for example i got buy one get one free on shower gel and toothpaste during the week, and have a seperate shelf to shore away these extra items, so u fully use one before using the other.

always check the shop fully, get to know where they usually have the specials, and always check the meat counter. I often get turkey breast for half price or shaws ham for half price.

check aldi for the different 6 fruits which they have on offer each month, tescos has a buy 3 for 4 euro thing at the moment.

in the house check how big the fridge is and the frezzer, alot cheaper to be able to buy the special prices and store them away.

the butchers beside dunnes in westside has 10 chicken fillets for 10 euro.

buy tupperware. best invention ever. cook up enough food for 3-4 dinners and simply store it in fridge, it cuts cooking and cleaning time to a fraction.

plan out what you are going to eat in advance, or at least have a rough idea. and dont get into the habit of buying chicken rolls when in college, ya there nice but gona cost you.

try and put away some cash each week for rent, so you dont have to come up with it all at once.

cant think of anymore, and when going out bring a nageen ;)

Thank you so much jayoo. May I ask you how much your living costs are? Gotta be low, I guess.

If anyone would like to comment in my thread "Where do study business/commerce?" in the "college"-forum, I would be thankful, although I guess the comments would be a little bit biased sometimes;)

    Mod parent up!

I dont think that can be stressed enough that cooking for yourself is much cheaper than eating out. I know people who eat twice every day in college and I'd say that wracks up a fair bit. Probably looking at about 15-20€ a day with various snacks and stuff. Aldi is your friend. Cooking isnt hard. Learn to do it. Starvation is a great teacher.

You only need to cook about once a week but cook enough for 4-6 portions and freeze the spare.

If its possible, organise with friends to cook for eachother on different nights although that can be VERY hard to maintain when you get involved with differnet clubs and socs and have different courses.

I need about 50€ for food each week, maybe upto 70€ the odd time when I need lots of stuff. Drink is up to yourself, I dont drink often or much but still about 30€ a week on "entertainment". I dont like clubbing though and i usually only go out once or twice a week.

Offo is your friend. Have stuff like beer wine whatever in the house cos now you cant buy it after 10pm which sucks.

    Accommodation

DO NOT LIVE IN THE FOLLOWING PLACES:
    1) Dun Aras - to far away from the college. Talking a 20-30min walk which is horrible in the rain. OTOH, its close (ish) Dunnes. Nice enough appts, but as always it depends on who you're living with. On the upside its close to Salthill but for weather-wise that only accessable a couple days of the year this being Galway and all. They are usually exam times.

    2) Lisdonagh - Small and like and near Dun Aras, but further away. Smaller appts and not as nice. I lived there myself.

    3) Corrib Village - Rumour has it that there is a 70% FAILURE rate for people who stay there. You'll hear enough horror stories on these boards and if you type corrib village into youtube.

My advice is to live close to the college because even if you end up with complete w*nkers in a **** place you can always stay in the college and get heavily involved with clubs and socs. You'll only be home to sleep and eat the odd time.

Bout all i can think to say at the moment....

Thank you so much squeenonline, that's really helpful. You people are so much more nice than those in the limerick forum, is it like that in reality too? I've heard Galway should be a more friendly city (better atmosphere etc). :)

Wait a second, is lisdonagh a student residence or an area? I don't know much about Galway geography, so I would be glad if you added that kind of information when giving advices about accomodation:)

Lisdonagh is a student residence like all the others but not very well known about at all. I know people who have been in galway 3 years and never heard of the place. My grandad has been here for 45 years and still never heard of it! Theres only 24 appts with 72 odd students (3 per appt but i think that one is kept for management, never quite sure). Liek I said, its a nice place during the summer exams (when its always sunny) and you can walk down to Salthill beach in about 15mins but the rest of the year its an uphill climb in the rain, i **** you not.

Lisdonagh is on the top of Taylors hill (the super rich area in Galway). It should come up on google earth. If you do have to live there, dont get a ground floor appt. They are cold and damp - from experience. All the heating goes straight up to the next appt.

If you are going for galway, apply for places now in other student residences. Menlo student village is really nice, bit far away but the appts are amazing.

One last thing: My rent this year may work out a little more (large single room in a 5bed house +++!) but you spend on rent, is what I paid on taxis last year. A 45minute walk from town, drunk, in the rain is not fun. 10€ for a taxi is not cheap and even if you are only going out once a week its expensive.

I can't find menlo apartments/the student village's homesite. There's a link from NUIG, but it doesn't work. Any advice?:(

What does their apartments contain and to what cost? :)

Right, google. If they dont have anyhting on Menlo (after trying the google cache too that often hides valuable info) i dont know. Try calling the number that should be on the NUIG page. If you are near to galway, come up and pop into the accommodation office. They'll help a lot.

Apartments are well furnished, leather couches, from what i can remember, washer drier, large fridge. There are different types on apartments though. I only know of one type though with 2double rooms and a single. All have ensuites.

Since you still have a lot of time (but not too much) look into Gort na Corriba and all of those too. You should really apply before the CAO form deadline. I was really stupid and didnt apply until august when the results came out even though i was sure i was getting to galway. I got stuck miles from the college in Lisdonagh in a double room.

If there are a group of you and your friends from home (that you think you could live with) consider getting somewhere together. It is one of lifes little lessons being able to live with people you cant stand, but living with people you know and like is always better.

    Okey, I'll give it a try. :)

I don't have any friends, but maybe I will get good room mates?:) I don't care what they do as long as they leave me alone to do what I want.

You don't happen to know anything about the price?

    /John
