As many of you know, we take our beer very seriously right here on BGRH. Well, as serious as you can, being overweight, balding, of advancing years and prone to spending your evenings drinking pretend beers in a virtual bar on the internet. Over on the Nocturnal forum, they only get started after dark.

In our collective never ending quest for good beer and having a good time, I present to you, possibly the most epic beers ever.

Where: Mc Laughlins Irish Pub, Kurze Straße 11, 40213 Düsseldorf. Here
When: Saturday, 7th of March, 2009
    Time: 7:30pm

How it works: You book your own flights. You book your own accommodation. We all meet and have a good time. I have the perfect venue in mind.

Why Dusseldorf? Fairly cheap to get to, relatively cheap to stay in, cheap to get around/eat and most importantly, good beer. There is also a Temple Bar type area, with plenty of bars/restaurants.

Getting there: Aer Lingus fly direct to Dusseldorf, twice a day. Ryanair fly to Weeze Airport, which is approx. 80km from Dusseldorf, but served by good bus/rail links according to their website.

Why talk about this so far in advance? Both Aer Lingus and Ryanair do the occasional sale, so if one comes along, we are ready to pounce and book cheap flights.

Also, generally speaking, the longer in advance you book, the cheaper.

Everybody is welcome, and I mean everyone. smile.gif

They're "only" €126 on Aer Lingus at the moment. How cheap do you want them to go?

    Much lower. :)

They were showing up around €90 two weeks ago when Aer Lingus had a sale on.

    Ah, about that.

Given we will be flying and there are limits on hand-luggage, we will be implementing an "away rule" in relation to the condensed milk.

What, like the same city? Yeah, probably.

The place we will be having this is in the Old Town, or Alt Stadt. So somewhere within reach of that would suit. Remember, as it is the Temple Bar equivalent, actually staying in the Alt Stadt will probably be more expensive.

SO excited, looking up hotels now, I'm assuming city centre or city centre North should be fine as they're the main options on expedia.

Yeah, I was there earlier this year and we stayed in the city center. A Best Western hotel, three star, nothing fancy, but did the job.

I'll see if I can dig out the name of it.

I think my In-Laws stayed in the Asashi. Is it a Japanese themed hotel? If so, they loved it.

Hotels.com - for hotels - read the reviews.

Hostelworld.com - for more student accomadation - again, read the reviews.

Ed: I might regret this if there are no rooms for me. I am waiting for a new passport before I can book tickets - three to six moths wait.

Right, I've updated the first post with a map to where the proposed venue is.

I don't want to name it yet, as I haven't contacted them yet. But that should give people an idea where it is, so they can book accommodation.

Just got a Ryanair email about a sale, so I checked out the cost of return tickets to Weeze airport.

Going out Saturday at 08.25 arriving 11.10, returning Monday at 07.00 arriving Dublin 07.45. Cost the princely sum of €45.03. Looks like the job's a good un.

    EDIT: It's Ryanair so usual T's & C's apply

Cork to Dublin=256KM. When you take into consideration you will be par-taking in a weekend of drinking in Dusseldorf surrounded by like minded individuals then it more than makes up for it. :) Take the plunge. You won't be disappointed.

or you could try something a bit more different. Instead of going to dublin why don't you fly into amsterdam and get a train from there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,663 ✭✭✭Blitzkrieger

Booked a flight out of Dublin. Feck it - I'll just drive.

The last time I was in Dublin it took 8 hours to drive home. I've been reluctant to go up since...

Just checked the Aer Lingus site - the flights are showing as €79 return for this weekend. I don't think you will get them any cheaper than that.

    Now, where's that credit card.....
