So if i put my 500gb ps3 drive (which was working in old 40gb ps3 with latest firmware), into a new ps3 (80gb model), will it work if i flash new ps3 to latest firmware first, prior to removal of 80gb drive.

no but ur saves might not work on it, y do ya want an 80gb if the only diff to a 40gb is the hd???

ps3 stolen by knacks, but had no drive in it at time. so have a 500gb sitting here with saves, psn games, lots of demos and divx's etc and about to buy an 80gb ps3. hopefully everything works if i flash latest ps3 firmware on 80gb first. my understanding is latest firmware is flash and drive based.

    Indeed I am !! lol

Rang gamestop...80gig ps3 is 400, but for 450 there is a 160gig ps3 in stock now with 3 games thrown in. Hmmm...

On an unrelated note - another thing I learned is you have to deactivate your ps3 before swapping drives or selling the thing on entirely...you can have either 4 or 5 activations max on your psn account apparently. So even if you sell on a PS3 (as I've done twice :)) and reset to factory defaults first to wipe everything, or say you just upgrade your hard drive on your ps3 as I've also done, your psn account is still showing as having the old ps3 you sold or old hard drive you upgraded as activated on your psn account. So I have unknowingly used up at least 3 activations. Suppose you could always create a new account, but you loose all your purchased content then :( This is probably old news to those who gameshare but something I only recently discovered.

I assume if you rang them up or emailed them to explain it they'd be able to sort it for you.

true. wonder does the 160gb use 65nm cell chips like the 40gb ?

I'd be very surprised if it didn't. Aren't all the ones currently in production at 65nm? If so I can't see why they'd stick with the 90nm for the flagship version.

just checked...correct all 80gb european and the 40gb have 65nm cells while the original 60gb and US 80gb had 90nm. But sony have announced transition to 65nm rsx as well since late sept or oct for the 80gb jap model. so hope is the european 80gb and 160gb are also 65nm/65nm. less noise then.

Haven't noticed much noise from mine but my friends 40GB is insanely loud, sounds like an xbox 360. I think he fúcked it up though as it wasn't always that bad. Though yes, even less noise would be nice, less likely to die as well which is always good. Personally I wish they'd spend more time doing things like this and making other improvements or make it cheaper other than increasing hard drive space.

As already have a 500gig drive to put into whatever version I buy, I wonder should I try to :

    1. Get a cheap 40gig, possibly 2nd hand from gamestop

    2. Spend the 400 euro on a new 80gig

    3. Spend 450 on a new 160gig - given the likelihood the 160gig will have 65nm chips for RSX and Cell and possibly be quieter.

    That's really my decision now.

I'd go with option 1, cheap and cheerful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

maybe go for the third option cos of the 3 games and sell the hd out of it, somone will buy it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,971 ✭✭✭Flaccus

I'm thinking of option 2 or 3 as it looks like they have the 65nm RSX chips and should run cooler/quieter then the 40gig model.

Off topic, but found out if you swap out your drive and put it into a new ps3 and say the drive has firmware 2.52 on it (the drives now have part of sony's firmware on them as flash memory is not large enough to hold it), but the new PS3 is pre 2.52 in flash, then the ps3 on bootup will prompt you to insert an external storage device with firmware 2.52 and press select+start. So yes, it's possible to use a drive from an old ps3 in a new ps3 but firmwares must match. Once the drive is installed, you have to then activate the ps3 in order to play your downloaded content or have access to your trophies.

    Is this a good deal??

Xbox 360 pro system(i.e. with hard drive and HD cables) for sale with 7 games GTA4, Half Life Orange Box, Bioshock, Halo3, Scene It (cool movie quiz game), Gears of War and Project Gotham racing. will also sell without some/all games at discounted price
    Price: 250 all games

What is the 'Pro System'??

Oops...wrong forum! Mods - please move to Xbox formum or delete
