    Hi Folks,

I backed up a partition of yesterday using SuperDuper and it was agonisingly slow at just 5Mbs. This is an external USB 2.0 HDD plugged directly into the back of my Mac Mini. Any ideas on why it would be so slow?

Ive also had alot of problems with USB speeds in Paralells etc which I thought was maybe just related Paralells and its drivers for USB but now Im thinking the two might be connected. Any feedback and suggestions appreciated.

    Regards,

    Dave

My macbook occasionally shows external disks as usb1.1. Normally when this happens I just plug it into the the second port and away goes my problem.

What does yours show up in system profiler / usb

@ Deevey - I checked the system profiler and it was USB 2.0 alright. I then connected the drive to another port but it made no difference. I am right in thinking 5Mbs is incredibly slow?

That type of speed seems crazy :-S, is it just super duper running that slow or all files you are transferring ?

Are you trying to clone the drive with Superduper or just copy all files ?

If its just a copy of the files, check the filesystem isn't fat32

Its definitely showing the correct 480mbps in system profiler for the drive ?

When I was using Superduper last time it generally did the trick for me for a 100 gig drive in about an hour or so.

Try Carbon copy cloner instead ? ... I find it great .. or if your on leopard time machine ?

Marx Computers: http://www.marxcomputers.ie/ do an external firewire case for 49 euro. pop in an IDE drive and it makes a very fast external drive for backing up your Mac with Super Duper. Especially useful if you need to boot from your backup as booting from an external USB drive is so sloooooow.
