I want to build a htpc built around either ubuntu or open suse. Could someone recommend me parts for it and what software i could use under linux. I have a €500 budget and dont need monitors. If the budget is too small i can put it in a standard tower for the time being.
    I already have:
    680watt xilence psu
    e6400 cpu
    mce remote
    dvd drive
    500gb mybook for storage.
I'm picking up a 360 dvd drive today also so can use this for the moment until i can pick up a blueray player.
    I'd be looking for:
    Tower
motherboard (If amd is better value i can sell my e6400 and pick up a amd cpu/motherboard)
http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=346193 The ram will pick up
graphics card if inbuilt is not enough, would like to play wow and counter-strike source on it some times but is not important as have a dedicated games machine.
Tv cards or whatever else is needed
Hard drive for the operating system

Hi Deceit, I suggest listing off your requirements of a HTPC and also what other devices you plan on linking it to.

Requirements : music, video files, blue ray, tv tuner epg........ I expect you are going for mythtv? It's meant to be excellent but time consuming unless you know Linux. There are preconfigured distros mythknoppix etc..... showing my ignorance here I know!

Linked to: TV, amplifier, tv source -sky/ntl......
Does it need to be whisper quite......answer is probably yes if going in a living room.
    Controlled by remote, wireless keyboard.......

Some of the above might help get things moving. The Linux folks, me not being one of them, are really helpful on this forum.

Best of luck and at least you some parts to start with.

    Cheers,
    majj

I'll be connecting it to my iomega nas 200d, my gaming rig, 360, tv and i might get sky tv around christmas (in an apartment so have to wait for ten apartments to say yes to it for them to put a decent sat on the roof as our apartments are facing the wrong way).
It would mostly be used for playing my collection of movies.
I will be trying mythtv, i'm new to linux but am using this as an excuse to learn it. I want to learn about linux and have already got rid of xp pro off my laptop in favour of ubuntu which i use more than my vista gaming machine. I dont mind it taking a while to set up if i learn while doing it.
It doesnt need to be whisper quite as i always have another machine on in the living room that wouldnt be.
I have the mce remote but would like a decent wireless keyboard/mouse for it also, bearing in mind im left handed.

I've been looking at these if i sell the e6400
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=348526 €129.00 cpu
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=346010 €73.50 motherboard
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=312308 €95 case
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=346193 €76 ram
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=343054 €79 hard-drive
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=338683 €69.90 keyboard and mouse
Dual booting ubuntu and open suse and using mythtv. Not sure if theres any other programs i'd need.

or if i keep the cpu
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=360341 €62 motherboard
    http://www.peats.com/cgi-bin/catalog.cgi?view_product=1&id=9903 €24.99 cooler

Would it be worth it to switch to the amd?
