    Hi guys,

I've got to wear a suit and tie to a social occasion coming up soon and I need get a tie to match my suit. I have a black suit and a dark blue (think prussian blue, not navy) shirt. I'm kind of stuck with what colour/style tie to wear with it though. Any suggestions would be great.

to be honest i can't think of anything other than a black tie.

i can't stand the sight of a dark shirt and a bright-coloured tie. why don't you wear a different coloured shirt?

if you're havin trouble matchin it to blue, ya could get a black shirt and white tie. . .it's a very 'in' look at the mo. . .and you can get a black shirt in dunnes for €15! plus, all black looks very well on men, and the white tie would make it more edgy :D

Don't wear a white tie with a black shirt, in fact dont wear any kind of coloured tie with a black shirt.

Keep it simple, dont try to look edgy. It will look dreadful. My suggestion would be buying a new shirt that isnt going to limit your choices of what tie you can put with it....a black suit with a "prussia blue" shirt doesnt sound great to be honest (it may look better in person. . .)

Would you be opposed to the idea of changing the shirt?

Buy a white or light blue shirt in Penneys, buy a tie in TK Maxx.

Unless you are planning on leaving your jacket on for the whole occasion / evening I wouldnt recommend buying a Penneys shirt....fit is generally dreadful and overall look of their shirts is poor.

Keep it simple, the "prussian" blue sounds too dark for a black suit. Get a bit of contrast between your suit / shirt (not too much though! :D)

you must be taking the pi$$. i couldn't disagree more. it screams "16 year old at his first dinner dance"

and whoever suggested wearing a purple tie with a dark blue shirt and a black suit needs their head examined. not even Jonathan Ross would wear that.

No waaay to black shirt and white tie - woeful!

    My suggestions :

I like textured thin black ties.
Get something with tone to stop it looking drab - silver/purple may work.
Perhaps a geometric or repeatitive print in colours would work.

Also depends on style texture of suit
Best thing is bring in shirt some where ask nice assistant what would they recommend! Oh and if you are 16 disregard first sentence if thats the case would look endearing.

While I agree with you in general, the guy doesn't want to buy a new shirt so best alternative is to buy a cheap one and a better quality tie.
