When i plug one of my older guitars (1980's) into any amp, there is a nasty hum/buzz constantly!

Any ideas on what it might be, or how to fix it?

Could be a number of problems...

    - loose bridge ground wire
    - none or minimal shielding
    - bad input jack
    - dodgy pickups

The first thing I'd check would be the bridge ground wire. It may have come lose, been removed or not even be there at all!

    how do you check that?

How in the hell do you ground a guitar to stop buzz?

Like, when i have my hand on a switch or knob of the guitar, its fine, but when i take it off, it buzzes like mad!

Then your guitar is grounded... as in, when you touch the strings you become the ground and the noise gets earthed. You've either got some crappy wiring or it's not shielded, or a combination of both. Given the noise you're talking about, I'm not sure shielding would fix it.

Best bet, if wiring is new to you, would be to bring it somewhere to get it looked at by a pro.

If thats the case then the ground wire is in place and doing it's job.

I'd recommend that you shield the internal cavities of the guitar.

You can also buy the materials needed from that website. :)

All fixed lads. Took off the bridge, and there was an earth wire there that was dissconected. One blob of solder and that was it!
