Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Macro Lens
Thinking of getting this lense as I want to start taking pictures at rugby matches and also road races for Boards AC.

I saw it here for 199.99 euro, can it be bought cheaper and is there another lense you would recommend for similar price. I'm in the novice bracket, so I don't want to spend much more. Thanks

I think for sports you will need to save your cash for a while and buy someting like a 70-200 f2.8 , if you want to really splash out then go for something with VR/IS

That would be a very slow lense under lights

It is a good general purpose zoom lens pitched at entry level and quality is reasonable when used in environments with good lighting. It's optics are low in contrast so you'd find yourself adding contrast in post processing. I actually quite like mine - So, i am looking for better but i love the focal range. It doesn't compare to some of the stuff costing 5 times as much but then again those cost eh.... 5 times as much ;) So i suppose it depends on your expectations. If you pay more then you'll get better quality and better chances of it performing over low light.

EDIT: Oh - and as regards cost. They're about €140 plus postage on eBay plus postage.
