    http://www.rte.ie/news/2008/1031/recycling.html

Looks like the green scam is set to further pick everyone's pockets.

Just like the "you only pay for what you throw away" propaganda has gone, as I knew it would. Now they want you to pay for giving them material which will be recycled.

Now can anyone else name a business where you are paid to get your materials????

I'm not "all in this togeather".

I think the Government should help them out in some way. After all, if they can't sell the materials at a profit then they're going to end up in the Government-run landfills

    Yay, more landfills! :D

Do you not realise that the prices have been dropped so as to give an excuse to introduce more charges.

Introduce the charge and watch the values sky rocket. There are bigger forces at work, my friend.

On average how many hundreds (or thousands) of years does it take for all our crap to disintegrate?

Maybe by then it will have all metamorphosed into some other useful mineral!

Ok so what do we do now?

I'm not sure what the OP is suggesting? Is it that the only reason people recycle is to save money?

I do it mostly because I think it's disgusting to throw away reusable things.

The wholesale price of recycleable materials dropping is irrelevant to that.
If it's not worth our while financially to send it abroad we should be funding domestic treatment plants and manufacture our own recycled goods such as plastics and paper.

**** those Greens and their bull**** agenda. Burn them off of the planet. On a bonfire lit with high octane petrol and old tyres.

I wouldn't wait too long for the OP to reply because I banned him for re-registering for the thousanth time.

I was actually wondering why Thorntons laid off so many people. Seems I have my answer now.

So it now has become financially unviable to recycle, well don't think I'll be separating my paper and plastics then, gte the Greens out, all they're doing is costing us more money.

computer recyclers are the ones having a laugh i think(although id do the same thing)

you pay them to take away your old computer which at the very least covers the cost of processing they melt it down and remove all the precious metals(gold is used on the processors, silver in other parts) and they get to sell on bars of silver and gold for creamy pure profit

I thought it was free to recycle computers.
Isn't there a place in Blanchardstown or thereabouts that takes old computers and tvs and stuff?

I saw a great episode of Penn and Teller's Bullsh*t where they debunked the environmental friendliness of recycling most materials. Besides aluminium cans, it takes more money and energy to recycle a lot of materials such as glass and paper than it does just to make new ones.

Plus doesn't it make sense to grow more trees for paper in order to save us all from the impending doom of global warming/climate change/whatever they're calling it this week?

    This.

My blood was boiling listening to Gormley on the news@1 on friday, on this topic. Bottom has fallen out of the market for materials? So f*cking what? If we weren't such a dirty little nation reliant on other countries to take our sh*t out and clean it then this wouldn't be an issue. We can barely even re-pupl paper here let along tackle plastics or glass.
Personally I like to recycle because like the other poster above, I hate to see thing that could be re-used thrown into a hole in the ground...I'd like to see it incentiveised so that A) companies produce less waste, especially packaging and B) that people are encouraged to recycle with money off products or a deposit based system (glass)...but I already pay for the privilege of recycling and I'll be f*cked if I'm going to increase that payment.
Moves like this are going to encourage less recycling and promote fly tipping and illegal burning of rubbish.
Agree with the OP; another money maker...Panda, Oxigen etc are all sitting around rubbing their hands.

Isn't most recycling going into landfills anyways, either here or shipped to China?

Folks, http://www.camara.ie/ is a great place to pass on your old computers and related equipment. Would highly suggest you contact them in the first place when it comes to recycling old computer related equipment.

They're also appreciative of extra help if you're ever interested in volunteering your time to help them rebuild and refurbish old systems for use elsewhere in world. Very Linux friendly also, open source all the way and no hidden licence costs.

Just thought I'd mention that as an alternative to recycling.
