Fade away or live forever...

Were some of the most famous people of the last 50 years only in that position because of an early demise? This seems to happen to musicians mostly but it applies across the board...

Hendrix - drowns in a puddle of his own vomit.

Cobain - shotgut to the face...

    Morrison - heart failure

Lennon - shot by a madman

    Kennedy - assassinated

The list goes on... These people WERE genious's but one thing I can't help thinking is would they still hold the same status in the world today if they went naturally at old age. Was it there talent or thier untimely death at the peak of thier careers that made them immortal?

I'm a huge fan of the above mentioned musicians but I can't help thinking that these people wouldn't be where they are today without dropping when they did...

    What you think?

If you could choose how would you go? Another member of the 27 club or end up like chuck berry unable to whip out the blistering solo's he was famous for on stage?

I want Bono to live forever. It's bad enough the way things are but imagine if he died!

Clapton, Dylan, McCartney (kinda), Rolling Stones. They are all alive and legends.

I think that they would be. Maybe not as much mystique about them but they would still be regargded as living legends if they were alive today.

True they are legends but still, they ain't what they used to be (clapton being the exception). Thier careers have been tainted by time imo...

So we should kill Clapton for fear he goes downhill (actually his solo 80's stuff was horrible but has since redeemed himself IMO)

But yeah if they were still alive I doubt they would have the same impact or status they have being dead.

This is true, but still....Pete Doherty or Johnny Borrell falling under a tube, even if it would result in immortality....tough one.

Have to say, I love Joy Division, but I honestly think they are rated more than the actual music befits because of the idea of them, and Ian Curtis' death.

What about Falco? I think he'd be a legend even if he was alive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭Zangetsu

Excuse the ignorance but who? Even his wiki doesn't explain who he was lol...

What about Freddie Mercury! He was a true loss to the music world and would still be legendary if he was still about!!! I would love to have gone to a Queen concert just to soak up that atmosphere.

In the movie world - I do often wonder how Marlyn Monroe or James Dean would have fared if they had reached a golden age

What made Cobain a genius?! Did I miss something! ? not sure if im happy about Jimmi Hendrix being in a list of 'genius' along with Kurt Cobain?!

I think all the people mentioned will never loose their legendry status no matter how old they lived to (the ones who are dead ) .Like the image of kennedy will alway be as he is portrayed ,same with Lennon , Morrison etc still in the prime of youth .Their mental facilties of course had they lived , will have diminished as it does with us all in old age

Bowie, Prince, Pelé, Maradona, Zola, Hunter Thompson, George Clinton and Mats Sundin will ALL live forever.

I'm not much of a fan of Cobain's music but at the time his visceral raw sound was really ground breaking when you compare it to the hair metal stuff that was around before him.

Ok so maybe that slipped into the list because of the 27 club comment at the end of my post but I think he was a genious. Lyrically he was amazing, his writing was great from the word go and his mastery of feedback on the guitar would put him in that list...

The fact he is in every top 10 of anything to do with rock is a testiment to his greatness tbh...

    @ latchyco

If lennon released 1 more album I prolly would have disowned him as a solo artist tbh lol... Would have been remembers as a Beatles nothing more. (Much like McCartney...)

I just think... i dunno... perhaps I feel that I'd like Richie Blackmore, Jimmy Paige, Joe Satriani and them guys should have pissed all over him... Just my opinion though.. I actually just stuck on some Nirvana there for the laugh! I'd love to be 14 again!

Dave Grohl and the foo fighters wouldnt be half as big as they are if it wasnt for Nirvana, but yes, he is more talented, he can sing-ish and kind of play an instrument or three... cobain, i'm afraid could do none of these things

I think Beatle Lennon compared to Yoko Lennon was another person although he did release a few gems amoung the dross ,no 9 dream ,mind games ,merry christmas war is over. Never liked imagine, with lyrics like '' imagine no Possessions ? '' from somebody who had millions in real estate.

There is another way - retire at a suitable age, before losing your powers and don't decline publicly.

Early death definitely contributes to the celebrity status of some - would Marilyn Monroe or even Princess Diana have the same cult status if they had died in their eighties with thinning hair and osteoporosis?
