Self-explanatory. Kind of interested in this, as everyone will say the 00's is the weakest decade in Hip-Hop by far. In no particular order, and off the top of my head...

    The Listening - Little Brother
    Connected - The Foreign Exchange
    The Lost Tapes - Nas
A Piece Of Strange - Cunninlynguists
    The Old Prince - Shad
Like Water For Chocolate - Common
Train Of Thought - Reflection Eternal
Fantastic, Vol. 2 - Slum Village
    The Love Below/Speakerboxxx - OutKast

I wanted to put American Gangster, but that song with lil' Wayne was so bad...

    Roots Manuva-Run Come Save Me
    Skinnyman-Council Estate of Mind
    Lupe Fiasco-Food & Liquor
The Roots-Things fall apart(think that was relased in 2000)
    Saul Williams-Saul Williams
    Kanye West-The College Dropout
Dizzee Rascal-Boy in the Corner(not really hip hop but still a fav)

Just saw this and trying to think of 00+ albums and not happening. Will have to check the mp3 when i get home to refresh. Off the top of my head only think of Murs 3.16 and El-P - I'll Sleep when you're dead as standouts.

Hello brooklyn...... shockingly bad! Skip straight to No Hook

A few of my favs off the top of my head:

    The Game - Devils Advocate
    The Game - Documentary
Snoop - Rhythm & Gangsta (The Masterpiece)
Ice Cube - Laugh now, cry later (just an interesting side note, he's playing B.A Barracus in the new A team movie :D)
    Redman - Red Gone Wild

Yeah you're right, its been a very weak decade! :D

I predict that i'll have to update this list alot as i think about it more....but to start:

    El-P - I'll sleep when you're dead
Atmosphere - God Loves Ugly & Lucy Ford
    P.O.S - Audition
Cecil Otter - Rebel Yellow (only recently released but incredible)
    Aesop Rock - Labour Days

.....this is hurting my brain thinking about this.

    BOOM

Things Fall Apart came out in '99, defintely one of the best albums of the 90's though. Game Theory was their best this decade.

    A few extra recent ones...

    Akir - Legacy
    Akrobatik - Absolute Value
Dan le Sac vs Sroobius Pip - Angels
Jazzy Jeff - return of the Magnificent
Ghostface - The Big Doe rehab, Meth back on form again here
Scarface - Made (anyone else rate this album as much as me?)
    Jay-Z - Black Album/Blueprint
oooppppssssnearly forgot outkast - Speakerbox/Love Below

Straight off the top of my head

Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein (2001)
The Coup - Pick A Bigger Weapon (2006)
    Cunninlynguists - A Piece of Strange (2005)
The Roots - Game Theory (2006)
    Mr Lif - I Phantom (2002)
Masta Ace - A Long Hot Summer (2004)
    Jay-Z - The Blueprint (2001)
    Madvillain - Madvillainy (2004)
DJ Format - Music for the Mature B-Boy (2003)
    Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow (2002)

And that's just a few I thought of and I limited it to one per artist. I mean come on we're talking about 9 years of music here, for people to say it has been a bad decade for the music, they're talking out of their ass.

I don't think anybody is saying it was a bad decade for hip hop, its just quite weak when you compare it to the albums of the 90's.

Lots of people say it is. You only have to go to any message board with Hip-Hop mentioned on it to read all the posts about people that claimed Hip-Hop died after 1996. It's just completely ridiculous. Yeah 1990 (1988) to 1995 (or so) saw the release of some of the greatest albums in the genre but the 00s have not been a weak decade. The genre is massive now with so many different styles and sounds while back then it was far more limited. People need to stop living in the past the culture has evolved and the whole genre is a completely different beast now.

This rant isn't aimed at anyone in this thread btw.

I think a lot of it is down to nostalgia as well Makavelli. Personally, I'll always love the classic west coast stuff that was released in the early 90's and I think its still a lot better than some of the stuff released today. Was listening to Warren G- Regulate earlier, and it just struck me how good the song was then and still is now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

That's kind of what I meant by living in the past. It's all well and good to go back to the classics and listen to them and appreciate them but that shouldn't give someone grounds to dismiss a decade of music because G-Funk died or the South got big etc. Some of these people seem to be living in a little bubble and because Album X wasn't released in 1993 when Hip-Hop was real it doesn't count and can't possibly be good.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,960 ✭✭✭DarkJager

Nostalgia is more reminiscing on things that made you feel good when they occurred, I don't think its really being stuck in the past. I agree there are some people who will dismiss everything after their favorite album/artist as being inferior. I don't, I just am more inclined towards those songs as they were a part of my history and a reminder of some very good times. There are also albums and songs released this decade that I count among my favorites ever, but I think everyone in the end has their own year/era that will be the most special to them.

There has been some seriously good hip hop coming out in the naughties its just that there is so much bull**** (g unit, laffy taffy, etc etc) coming out that it takes that bit more work and looking to find a good album.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 96 ✭✭eamonhonda

    j dilla- the shining
blu and exile - below the heavens
    exile - dirty science
    9th wonder- the drem merchant

couldnt agree more with this theres plenty of good albums out there but they are covered up by all the bullsh*t

    Vaudeville Villain - Viktor Vaughan
    Madvillain - Madvillainy
Hated By Everyone Vol 1-2 (bootleg) - RA The Rugged Man
Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell - Jedi Mind Tricks
Stepfather - People Under The Stairs
Beat Konducta Vol 1-2 - Beat Konducta
    Donuts - J Dilla
    I'll Sleep When I'm Dead - El-P

Parts of that Rugged Man one would be from the last decade. But that would be my list of most listened to hip hop albums ever. I don't really listen to that much 90's stuff aside from The Infamous, Illmatic, Aquemini and Only Built 4 Cubin links. And I don't listen to them nearly as much as the stuff I listed above.

    The Game ---> The Documentary

Two top albums from the 00's imo!:)

    Sage Francis - Personal Journals
    Sole - Selling Live Water
    RJD2 - Deadringer

Naughties have been good for hip hop but as the consensus goes, there's lots of bad hip hop that has hit the charts which is smokescreening the great albums.

    Lupe Fiasco - The Cool

    Common - Be
    NERD - In Search Of

Snoop Dogg - Paid Tha Cost To Be Da Boss (2002)
Snoop Dogg - Tha Blue Carpet Treatment (2006)
    OutKast - Idlewild (2006)
    Busta Rhymes - Genesis (2001)
Busta Rhymes - The Big Bang (2006)
Kanye West - The College Dropout (2003)
    Cam'Ron - Come Home With Me (2002)
    Redman - Malpractice (2001)
Truth Hurts - Truthfully Speaking (2002)
    M.O.P - Warriorz (2000)
    D12 - Devil's Night (2001)
    J-Dilla - Donuts (2006)
    Talib Kweli - Quality (2002)
    Killer Mike - Monster (2003)
Beastie Boys - To The 5 Boroughs (2004)
The Game - The Documentary (2005)
    Wu-Tang Clan - The W (2000)

There have been some really good albums in the 00's, just at a lower proportion compared to the 90's.

orizio,i no we all have our opinions, but many feel that hip hop has gone south since the 90's literally. many new acts are are based on a dance or clap that just cant be classified as hip hop or original. did u listen to the album i mentioned above? a classic. but even now mobb deep have been criticised for going too commercial. 50 cent was said to bring out a new album which went back to good old 'gangsta rap' but didint bring it out because of apparent battles in the business which it wouldnt be ready for. a good album of the 00's was t.i urban legend. songs like u dont know me or motivation rely had a good 90's feel but look at him now dueting with rihanna and doin r n b. acts like this which are generally found in the last few years has really dissapointed me and im constanstly on the look for a new raper hu can bring the good days back. cashis seems quite promising from what iv heard on the country hound lp,not perfect but still above what has recently come out such as ( and i no many people will strongly disagree with me) albums like college dropout or particularly any of diddys new beats or collaborations.

what im sayin is that the rappers/artists who have changed their style since they have come out and made it big is what dissapoints me. for example i loved the infamous mobb deep, but not their new cds. i do however like pretty ricky. there boys never tried to be anything they arent and balance r n b with hip hop perfectly. so here is my top 5 albums iv heard of late (roughly)

    in no particular order.
    1.the infamous-mobb deep
    2.urban legend-ti
3.bluestars-pretty ricky.dont rule them out give it a listen
4.the marshall mathers lp-eminem. some great raps there
5.the country hound lp-cashis. heard on some of the tracks on the re-up.but this short album really gives a good insight to his raps.listen out for ms jenkins(quite a chorus) among others.

It might be just me but does nobody rate T.I ---->

    King
    TI vs TIP

King of tha South kills both these albums which include huge tracks such as:
    • What you know about that
    • Big **** Poppin
    • Hurt
    • Dope Man
    • Top Back
    • You Know What it is
These tracks just for example. Paper Trail is also quite recent but has some big tracks on it also....On Top of The World, Swing Ya Rag, Swagger Like Us!

I also gotta mention Tha Carter III, Its a love it or hate it album, I think its a masterpiece.

Other albums for me over the Last few years....
Game - Documentary, Doctors Advocate. Kanye West - All 3. - Get Rich or Die Tryin, DMX- The Great Depression, And Then There Was X, Grand Champ.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

Illmatic came out in '94 there G.

The Streets make electronic/dance music as far as I am concerned, and I wouldn't call what Mike Skinner does rapping. Or singing for that matter.

I don't think it's a love it or hate it album, there's 4 or 5 good tracks on it and then the rest is pretty forgettable.
