Poor reception on RTE 2

I'm living in South Tipp and I'm using a group B aerial to receive RTE 1, RTE 2 and TG4 from a local mast a few miles away. RTE 1 is coming in perfectly on channel 35 as is TG4 on channel 48 but RTE 2 on channel 37 is poor.

Aertel is perfect but the entire screen has swirly lines. I disconnected the cordless phone and broadband modem but it made no difference.

Any suggestions of a possible cure before the champions league returns would be most welcome.

Try discoonecting any VHS/DVD/Game Console/Sat box/Cable box etc. Sounds like co-channel interference.

Gradually pull out aerial plug VERY slowly. If the swirly line vanish before the picture turns to noise, then it is overload and you need a 6dB or 12dB in-line attenuator.

Thanks for the reply Watty should have said that I connected the aerial straight to the TV with no improvement. I will try removing the aerial slowly as you suggest when I get home

Tried that Watty no change I'm afraid. Cant think of anything else in my house causing it.

Sounds like you are not receiving from an RTE transmitter but from a community 'deflector'/self help system for the national channels

as no single RTE transmitter site uses the three channels (35,37,48) you mention.

It could be a fault at the transmitter, so check if any neighbours (receiving from the same transmitter) have the same problem?

How long has the problem been there, and is it continuous?

Its an RTE transmitter alright changed from 40, 43 and 50 last few days. dont know if there was a problem before then, had RTE through chorus. Hard to find out anything from the neighbours I dont think most of them even realise RTE can be got without a sattelite dish

Thats the Cahir transposer, it was due to change.

A lot of VCR modulators are set on Ch 36 or 38 (usually very clear channels), which would cause problems with anything on adjacent 35 and 37, but you have ruled that out.
(So not only do people have to retune their TVs, but also retune VCR modulators!)

As I said, check with someone else nearby if possible.

post a picture of the reception if you can?

Can't send you a picture of my own reception at the moment but this picture is pretty much it

I have since spoken to RTE and they assure me there is no problem at the transmitter.

The exact same thing is happening me but on TV3 from Clermont Carn. All other channels coming in brilliantly. Only started happening 2 days ago. Strange....

The patterning in tippwarrior's picture (PaddyC's picture is not showing where I am - blocked) there is what you might expect from nearby mobile phone base station signals 'swamping' your masthead (or distribution) amplifier.

tippwarrior, do you have any aerial amplifier, or using a powered set-top aerial?

No Antenna I dont have either. As I said I suspected cordless phone or modem but ruled both out. Its a bit of a mystery.

Even though the interference didn't dissappear when I tried the above is it still possible its a signal overload. I know I'm grasping at straws now but I'm getting desperate.

Any chance it may be RTE 2 from Mitchelstown on Ch44. I believe it is on a 1kw transmitter. When in Ireland I can receive it. 12 miles north of the txer with no amplification required.

No Foggy my aerial is pointing at the correct transmitter. Mitchelstown is in a completely different direction.
