Headaches 24/7

    Hi everyone,

I didn't know where to post this so I hope this is the right place to do so.

I have been religiously stydying for My University exams/assignments for the last month or so and Approximately two weeks ago my body decided it had enough and ended up with the biggest headache yet. It took me 2 days to recover from it and so I decided to visit my gp just to make what the problem was.

Since one of my family members has diabetes I got a blood test done and luckily enough everything is perfect. I also got my eyes checked out and they told me that I'm short sighted. Since two weekends ago I have had this constant headache where the pain increases everytime I go to bed. It never goes away and well, I'm practically never resting. I wake up every 2 hours during the night because of the pain and I guess it does ease up during the day.

The optometrist told me that perhaps my eyes are straining and so perhaps that's what's causing the headaches. My gp also agrees but also believes that all the stress from all those weeks of hardcore studying could also be causing it. I don't know what the problem is, I mean, if it was my eyes wouldn't the pain dissapear whenever I went to bed? Well im getting my glasses next week so I hope it helps but I want to know what else people think it could be. I hope someone can help, I'm practically even in pain writing this up.

    Thanks in advance everyone.

If you are stressed and working hard, then it takes more than going to bed for that to disappear. I've often found myself grinding my teeth and clenching my jaw when asleep, often waking up worse than when I went to bed, all due to stress and pressure.

You need to do something to relax and/or physically exert yourself (like the gym/sport). Until you can learn to put the stress to one side, you'll continue to suffer everytime you're under pressure.

It could also be your sinuses...try Sinutab and lay off the dairy for a few days and see if that helps. (Not medical advice btw!)

Its more than likely your blood pressure. I had a similar problem. Headaches from morning to night. couldn't get asleep with them and was like a f**king demon with everyone. Pain killers weren't working and I was taking 2 or 3 ponston 500mg at a time they stopped working too..

I went to me GP. Got a blood pressure check and was prescribed ACE inhibitors. The headaches went quickly and I'm back to normal.

This may seem strange but go to your dentist and explain your headaches to him.

I used to suffer very bad headaches when under stress/pressure from exams that would be worse during night and first thing in the morning, just like yours, and then would be a duller ache during the day.

During a dental checkup the dentist asked me how long I had been grinding my teeth for and if I had been suffering headaches or facial pain. It turns out that when I'm stressed I spend the entire night clenching my jaw tightly and grinding my teeth- so loudly in fact that I occasionally wake other people! Obviously then I wake in the morning with a splitting headache that carries on all day. This sounds very like you- out of interest try and remind yourself to notice at intervals during the day whether you are holding any tension in your lower jaw. I find that I do without noticing and try to relax it whenever I think of it.

Your dentist can make you a special retainer to wear at night that will stop the teeth grinding- I only need to wear mine during periods when the headaches start.

If you're taking painkillers (even just paracetamol) most days they could well be the problem.

This happened to my husband when he was studying, and once he came off the painkillers the headaches stopped.

Whoa alot of medical advice being given, lets not be too hasty.

It sounds like whatever is causing your headaches is being amplified by the stress you are under which is probably causing anxiety. Either go back to your GP and go see another GP.

    Hey Everyone,

Wow, thanks heaps for the info, there's a lot of interesting information here.
The piankillers and the one about the teeth - i never even thought of that one. Now I have a lot of avenues I could look into.

Well since the last time I posted here, I borrowed this thing my dad uses to relax his neck whenever he feels tense, and almost immediately the pain began to decrease. I slept better for the first time in two weeks and well practically since last Saturday, the pain has decreased siginificantly.

There have been a couple of times where it has wanted to come back but it hasn't managed to get out of control. I've also been using this pillow which is designed to ease the bloodflow to the head and I have been taking B COMPLEX tablets - for anyone who's also been experiencing similar pains.

Some people also feels that, like the above posts, I'm practically tense from the workload and i'm practically suffering from Anxiety. I also got my glasses at the beginning of the week but more and more I think the problem is seperate from my vision.

Like you guys have pointed out, If i don't get back to my old seff soon, I'm gonna try a third GP and will probably go for a headscan.

    Thanks heaps everyone.

Another happy customer, so... Thread closed.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
