A friend of mine is looking at buying an 1998 A4 . I heard there is some issue with the steering rack on this model . Whats the best way to check that its working ok

I've never known about any issues but when I had my one, I always felt that it felt Reliant Robin-ish. That there was a semi-twitchy vagueness, a not-quite-100%-connected-to-the-road kind of feel. I know that Audis are intended to have a heavyish steering limpness but I knew it couldn't be right...
