Have to get this over the weekend cos I need it for Monday morning.
So that most likely means a bricks and mortar store...

Most of the €500 range are asus, acer etc and I know nothing about these manufacturers and build quality etc. Does anyone know who's decent at this price?

Just need a basic enough laptop with wifi, about 80gb HD min and dvd player.

Will be used for word processing, tunes, movies and internet.

    Thanks
    Keith

If your Monday deadline is critical then the Acer or Asus would be grand. just watch out for the amount of RAM (1 GB Min, Vista is a bitch to run on anything less. In fact you will evenually need to upgrade to 2 GB). If the deadline isn't critical then try laptops direct. I bought my new Fujitsu Siemens for €499. Delivered in 2 days from UK. Very impressed, not enough RAM though. Advertised at 1GB but in reality running at about 768MB.

Okay, just because it was mentioned above. I'd like to completely disagree and say, avoid laptopsdirect like the plague. Awful Awful Awful retailer, great prices but no support when things go wrong. Had an asus go wrong and i'm still battling to get it sorted...and that was 4 months ago...(end of rant).
It'll be a case of going around to all the retailers and trying to find the best machine for the cash, i've heard tesco and dunnes have had decent machines recently. Sorry i can't be more specific.

Fair enough. Not sure he has a huge amount of choice open to him for €500 though. Obviously it would be nice to have a grand and walk into a shop and buy a nice machine.
