Are you on a full time contract? Does your contract say how many hours you will be given? Are you in a union? If you are full time how long have you been working set hours?

yup full time !! em had a look at the contract 2day it just says basicly that full time is 5 days a week and gives the hours very vaige !! nope not in a union and 3yrs at full time hours ??

Hmmm. well if your contract says you should get 5 days thats what you should get. and as far as I know if you,ve been working set hours for that amount of time their not allowed to change them without you agreeing. At least thats what my union told me. I suggest going to your manager and having a chat. Explain that your contract says your meant to get 5 days. Dont get agressive with him/her as it will just get there back up. If he/she is a ass about it I'd suggest joining a trade union like mandate or siptu and let them fight your case.

Sorry but I believe you are mistaken here. The OP says that sales are down. There is no doubt about that. If the company has to introduce short time working, then so be it. It is obviously an attempt to reduce costs in a difficult trading period which will ultimately help the company get by till things improve. I dont know what the union can do, but the OP may be shooting themselves in the foot and may end up getting laid off completely.

We are in the midst of the worst recesssion the country has ever seen and some pills will be hard to swallow. The OP should be thankful? they are not being let go completely. I speak as someone who did have to put staff on a three day week for a period. I researched this in detail and found that it is completely legal and above board for a period of some months, then if it does not revert back to full hours, the employee is entitled to seek redundancy.

As the OP points out, sales are down (like everyone in this country) so it would not be difficult for the company to justify its actions.

i understand that it is because sales are down bt the only way i found out my hours were cut was on the roster nobody approached me to tell me or discuss it !!! and the fact that they have just employed 2 new directors does add salt to the wound !!!i mean i think there should have been some sort of communcation to let me know ???
