    Hi all,

Just wondering if Marathon training will help with improving times over shorted distance. I'm thinking of running Belfast in May but my long term goal is a PB over 5 mils in 2010.

Would the base training needed to complege a marathond give a good base level to start from , or would the increaded miles reduce speed or slow down speed improvment?

I will be at 40 miles per week in the next 6 week and will hold that till feb,

My aerobic fittness is not what it shuld be at this stage and I think the marathon training will help with that.

    Short answer - Yes!

The increase in your aerobic fitness will be of great benifit over all the shorter distances (obviously to a certain point, I'm not sure 40 miles of aerobic running a week will do much for your time over 100m!)

My 10k time went from 47 minutes (pre marathon training) down to 43 (post marathon training) and I'm hoping for more gains, as I move into a more advanced marathon training schedule, and also do some 10k specific training plans.

I'd have said that it will impact your shorter distance times significantly and negatively.

Nah, the training for 10k and marathon is almost identical. Don't bring the long runs into the 15-22 mile range and don't do two long runs in a week and you'll be fine.

I agree. I have run all my pbs from 3k upwards when I'm training for a marathon.

Well now i dont know what to do... Will have my miles to mid 40's by the end of january and will keep it at that for 12 week, then focus on speed from May...

Seems to be mixed views on marathon training related to shorter times so.. I know if i do register for a marathon it will help me focus on the mileage...

Will need to decide in the next 2 week as I would only be about 22-23 week to the marathon i would do.
