other than the backwards compatibility for PS2 games, is there any difference between the two?

Neither has backwards compatibility for PS2 games.

Get the 40GB model, it's the same as the 80GB but just a smaller Hard Disk. with the price difference you can get an even bigger hard disk and just use that.

80 Gig also comes with the Dual Shock Controllerunlike the old six-axis one that came with the 40Gig.

Sixaxis is WAY better than dualshock, plus the Batts last alot longer

I haven't noticed any difference in battery life myself and with the new firmware update, the controllers will turn off after ten minutes of inactivity (if you want it to).

May as well get the 80GB, unless you find the 40GB for a very good price.

Couldnt disagree more, dualshock is a nicer weight has rumble and i found no difference in battery.

what he said. I've noticed no difference myself in battery life. Plus the dualshock adds a lot to games that support it. Burnout Paradise is half a game without it, and the increasing hearbeat rumble in Drakes Fortune saved me from dying numerous times.

Plus the vanilla sixaxis controller feels very flimsy. I almost snapped it in half whilst playing Ninja Gaiden, but the dualshock held its own and didn't even creak

    No model PS3 from November '07 onwards supports PS2 games (40GB & 80GB models)
If you can find a 2nd hand 60GB unit, it will play PS2 games.

    OR

You could wander down to your local Tesco and buy a brand new 80GB PS3 for €299; Tesco doing 25% off all consoles & games till Sunday.

It would be a good idea for sony/game companys to bring out Classic PS2 games... There doing the whole classic games downloadable on PSN but the content aint great, Crash Bandicoot iirc, think its mainly PS1... I know the Japense PSN has Resident Evil 1 amongst others to download, I definitely go for Resi if it was downloadable...

Apparently you can use a 360 to hit things with?

Also, the Xbox 360 plays PS2 games? Wow! I wish you'd let me know this 3 months ago, silly me went and bought a 60GB PS3 on Adverts.ie when I couldn't find one in Game or GameStop. I even got the original receipt!
