Sam Mendes has signed on to direct the much mooted adaptation of the cult graphic novel, Preacher. The American Beauty and Road to Perdition helmer will start work on this project after completing promotion for his latest Oscar bait Revolution Road, and editing on his untitled comedy with The Office star John Krasinski. The novel is about a preacher who travels across the country to take on a supernatural force when his Texas town is overtaken by satanic wrong sorts. James Marsden has been linked with the role for years, while Daredevil director Mark Steven Johnson was set to produce a HBO series based on it that fell through. No word on casting yet, but let us not forget that Road to Perdition was also a graphic novel brilliantly adapted for the big screen by Mendes, and this should be no different.

    I won't hold my breath .....

Preacher could make a fantastic film, and Mendes is certainly a good director. But Preacher's had a troubled history in making it onto the screen, I think Kevin Smith was trying to get it made about ten years ago.

Wow, what a hilariously rubbish summary of the comic series. And yeah, I wouldn't exactly hold my breath - a 66-issue comic series is never going to be comfortably abbreviated into a single film without serious editing and trimming, quite aside from the previous production hell issues. The HBO miniseries option would probably have suited the material best, but that's not happening any more so no point lamenting it further...

Indeed. I'd be very impressed if they actually stick with the original series and who he really wants revenge and answers from. Further bonus points if they keep the end result of that lineage as they did in the comics as a babbling retarded man child. What chance of that though...
