    Hi All,

Are the older type of large timber frame puttied windows suitable for putting double glazed units in ?. I think the original frames are 60mm thick, which does not leave much room for a normal thickness DG unit (24mm ?), although I know there are thinner units available. I was thinking of removing the original rebate and using bead strips instead to hold them in. I know the sashes will be a bigger problem, but even if they were left as is, I think there would still be a big benefit by replacing the main unit. Are there any companies that will supply DG units to specified size ?. Has anyone experience of this being done ?

Fixed panels are not a problem, if you have hinged windows then depending on the size of the stile you could put in d/g units.

There are various sizes of d/g units available from 14mm up in 2mm stages to 30mm.

If you are looking for the best glass possible I'd go for 18mm gas filled K-glass IMO (18mm because you can't get the gas nozzle into a 14mm d/g unit) in places where you can't get an 18mm d/g unit then put a 14mm d/g unit.

It must be pointed out that if you want the glass puttied back in you'll have to use a non-linseed putty or protect the seal between the glass with silicone then linseed putty in place.

Personally I don't like to use glazing beads unless I have to, I think putty looks far better

Last bit of advice when measuring up for the d/g units measure from the inside frame and add on 25mm (1"), when routing the rebates for the d/g units rout in 15mm (5/8") this will leave a 5mm clearance for you to fit your d/g units.

I'm not sure what the site rules are about posting company names but if you want to know who I get my glass from PM me.
