Possible stupid question alert!

Sorry, I've never had dealings with courts but am listening to a friend telling me about her ex-partner (who fills her full of nonsense) and I wonder if he's at it again.

He has told her he was in Bridewell District Court yesterday for 4 lots of DUI with no tax and insurance, leaving scene of accident, non-prodcing etc, etc, and that the judge said 'ah sure, go on then and see if you can find the insurance documents and come back tomorrow and show me them'.

He then starts crying and saying he has a 98% chance of a custodial sentence.

I'm not asking for legal advice or anything on this case, but the stupid question is, can/does the district court give custodial sentences? I'm not sure if there is a limit that different courts can give in relation to fines/sentences etc and if this would apply to Bridewell?

Yes, 12 months maximum custodial sentence, but can extend to 24 in certain circumstances.

4x s.49s and he thinks he has only a 98% chance of chokey? Hope springs eternal.
