Hi guys, I was looking for a cheap week or 10 days away in some east European country. Which is the cheapest country?? I would like some seasonal weather also - we don;t get cold Winters. Would it be worthwhile going to Poland, Lithuania or Latvia?

hands down poland imo. Its soooo cheap. Krakow I was in twice last year...summer and winter time. Both were lovely. ten days would give you some time to travel to different parts of poland as well. make sure you visit Auschwitz though....very very errie place.

Krakow rocks the shazba alright, but bear in mind, if you want to do eastern Europe, you may well be cold. I know everyone says it, but I'm going to say it anyway, the cold there is different to the cold here. Here it's wet & windy cold, so you likely won't mind it so much there.

I'm a massive fan of eastern Europe, have travelled there many times, and if you're going there in winter, you should be ready to embrace the cold and see the beauty, rather than want to sit in your hotel.

Lithuania, Vilnius is beautiful, as is Budapest. Vilnius is different to where most ppl go but 4 days is more than enough to see it. Actually, that's the case with any city. But in my opinion, regardless of weather, one of the best trips in the world is Dubrovnik up to Split and anywhere around Croatia. That's my tip.

In terms of cheapness and having a class holiday, fly into Dubrovnik, get a bus down to Budva in Montenegro, get a taxi (32km for €3) to Bar, get a train to Belgrade in Serbia, and that's cheap. But that's a lot of travelling for 10 days cos you have to get back to an airport. You could fly out of Budapest. Stunning, cheap and not touristy at all.

yea i reccomend krakow too- a great city & cheap. Like another poster said it will be absolutely freezing so be prepared. You could get a train to warsaw for a couple of days or you could go to prague too-thats nots as cheap anymore though. There is also a ski resort called zakopane near krokow which might be a worth a day or two if you fancy that. You can also get overnight trains which are worth considering to save time. We did prague-vienna- budapest by train. Budapest was definetely the cheapest.

I agree also that budapest is terribly cheap. We did budapest, vianna, bratislava, prague, berlin and amsterdam by interrail this time last year in 12 days and budapest was both the coldest and cheapest by a mile. Great experience travelling around europe imo.
