You can get from Paris to Marsailles on the Med coast in 3 hours so if you're ideal spot is on a TGV line then don't limit yourself to a place just beside Paris.

Perfect places closer to Paris to spend a weekend are :

    Chatres
    Vézelay
    Chantilly
    Auvers-sur-Oise

I have a great book (in French) called "Week-ends autour de Paris - Guide de Routard". If you're interested and are about town before the weekend I can give it to you.

    Hi Ponster,

Many thanks for your ideas and generous offer of the book loan. Anyway i dont think ill be around for the weekend.

Re Marseille, to be honest I dont think we'd want to trek as long as 3 hours out of Paris, my gf is there and we dont have too much time so would prefer as little travel as possible. Plus TGV is pretty expensive seeing as we're only planning to stay one night (2 days)

The list of places you mentioned I will check each one! Are any within an hour or so of Paris? Which were your favourite(s)?

I also found this place only about 40mins from Paris, you heard of this?
Has cycling and horseback riding, small town, could be what we're looking for..not sure though!

Thanks again for your input, much appreciated!

Rambouillet is a wonderful place. 30 minutes from Montparnasse on TGV, it's get a huge forest with 50km of cycle lanes and 70kms of horse tracks. The town is pretty and the castle is well worth the visit.

I can recommend places to stay and places to eat depending on budget :)

wow!! That's great that you've been there. Thought this post was abit of a shot in the dark...

As I mentioned we were going to go for two days and one night only. So arrive early on Saturday, stay Sat night and leave Sunday evening.

As it's only one night, id like to stay somewhere relatively nice- not budget accomodation anyway (not this time around anyway!). So yea, could look at a nice enough hotel id say. Up to EUR150 id say?

Also would be interesting in hear one nice place to eat (for the evening meal) and the rest we would probably keep it cheap and cheerful if you know what I mean!!

Where is Montparnasse? Might there be any other train, I hear the TGV is very pricey..

Anyway im very excited to hear your thoughts on the above!

Montparnasse is a train station in south-central Paris. The TGV may be the same price as the 'normal' train depending on whan you buy the tickets (www.sncf.fr). The normal train takes 1 hour.

Lunch over. Back later with more.. :)
