hi everyone, i used to have sky digital a few years ago, but switched to NTL digital and have pretty much the full package with them. However, i still have a sky dish in place, i presume still looking at the right satellite and everything. Is there any kinda box i can get for more channels, some kinda freeview decoder or something? and is it worth my while? I have to admit i have a bit of a fetish for attaching boxes and things to my tv, so this would be a nice project, if only for the sake of completion :p Thanks in advance for your advice

You could always get a Freesat HD receiver, plug it and enjoy some HD (BBC, ITV...). NTL would be redundant then, but it all depends on what you watch( Sky Sports/Movies, Setanta are subscription only), if you have a HDTV or not, if you can understand other languages...

Otherwise, it's not really worth your while, you'd have more channels but NTL has the essentials, what you don't get is mostly teleshopping and some random channels. Then, somebody could

With a FTA satellite receiver you can get these channels.
With a freesat or sat4free receiver you will get these channels with a Sky like epg, with the ability to add the other FTA channels manually.

Is it worth your while - only you can decide that.

hmm ok, is there boxes that take cards or offer subscription packages other than sky's box? like i'd love to have some relatively cheap satellite package, particularly if it increased sports channels? i remember reading that some games that aren't on sky sports are on canal+ and networks like that.

I don't intend to do it, and therefore don't want any procurement information on it, but do bold boxes exist for digital satellite in the same way as digital cable?

If you intend to do it then why ask about it? You are not allowed ask about that here.

cause i always wondered why, if they exist, they never took off like the other boxes when they probably get way more channels?

Your Dish can only get the UK platform FTA/Freesat/Sky channels. Other services require a re-alignment of dish and ideally a bigger dish.

Any pay channels from any Satellite need a valid subscription and card otherwise you are stealing a service (even if it is Polish, French, Dutch, Italian) and that is criminal, unlike copyright infringement which is a civil issue.

To get Canal+ or other services you need a bigger dish (80cm is a good start) and some method of getting a subscription. There are about 22 satellites than can be received in Ireland on a 110cm / 1.2m dish. To get about 3 or 4 satellites in a tight group (13E to 28E= Hotbird, Astra, Sky) you can use a 80cm to 95cm dish with 3 or 4 LNBs spaced.

For a wider fixed selection you need a Toroidal Dish.

To get all the satellites a 110cm motorised dish is recommended. About 2,500 free TV and and about 2000+ Radio possible, though many are shopping channels or not English.

Pay channels require a subscription. The penalty for theft of service of Pay TV (MMDS, Cable, Terrestrial or Satellite) is up to 5,000 Euro and up to 6months jail even for those assisting. That's one reason you can't talk here about it. Also you are not anonymous on the Internet.
