Don't know much (anything) about drums but my neighbour bought a set from www.waltons.ie - worth a look.

If you're serious about playing drums then go to a music store, there are several in Dublin that sell drums. And I'm sure in other parts of the country too.

I wouldn't touch that with a stick (pardon the pun). Take a look on thomann plenty to choose from there. http://www.thomann.de/ie/acoustic_drumkits.html

In Lidl you'd probably be better off buying an assortment of pots and pans tbh. ;) Try some kits in music shops. I'd be inclined to go with Thomann or some other online retailer in the end though.

Many of these "budget" kits sold by music shops (online or retail), or this Lidl kit are generic Chinese made products. They are just badged to order. Absolute rubbish materials used, and not-so-durable hardware.

You are better off going to the second hand market, as you will pick up a far better quality kit for in and around the same money.

For guitar or bass I'd advice you to start with a decent cheaper model and then buy a better one if you find you're any good at it, not for drums.

The really budget no brand name models I've found are all atrocious. You'd find something far better second hand for that price. Probably brand new from Thomann too.

If your lookin to buy a new drum kit, dont look at lidl - it WILL fall apart.

If your serious about it, theres a great little pearl kit called a Target series. I started off on one of these 10 years ago, sold it on about 5 years ago to a mate and its still perfect today.

It might be thast little bit more expensive but its worth buying a brand name.

And especially with Pearl, if it does fall apart, they'll sort it out for you ASAP. Their customer service is among the best there is.

You cannot buy that kit man! When you want a better one you wont be able to shift it.

Ok so.... the general concensus seems to be.... "NO"!

Cheers for the advice lads! I think I'm gonna go for a 2nd hand kit starting off, and then If I really take to it I can upgrade to a better set after a while.

Thomann is a great site, my whole family buy all our musical needs there. Far cheaper than the shops and very reliable

Screw that. If Thomann are cheaper, buy from Thomann. Musician Inc. and co. were raking it in at the expense of Irish consumers when times were good. If they wanted consumer loyalty to tide them by in the uncertain future, they should have earned it while they had a chance.

    I just did:

    FENDER AMERICAN STANDARD STRAT
    Thomann: 1,055
    Xmusic: 999

    Gibson Les Paul Standard
    Thomann: 1,799
    Xmusic: 1,899

    MARTIN GUITARS JOHNNY CASH D-35
    Thomann: 4,599
    Xmusic: 3,999

Pearl Reference Series, Shell Set "Fusion
    Thomann: 2,599
    Xmusix: 2,299

    TD-9KX V-DRUM KOMPLETT
    Thomann: 1,950
    Xmusic: 1,599

It would seem Xmusic in general are cheaper and Irish. Although their site only lists a few products.

On the subject of musical instruments, has anyone any advice on buying a banjo (4 string). 11 year old is playing mandolin in school - and seems to have a talent - he has asked Santa (yes he still believes :)) for a banjo.

I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THESE AND NEED HELP PLEASE :confused::confused:

    Thanks in advance (and anticipation)

My dad is a drum teacher, he bought one of those kits for teaching, it's actually not that bad would you believe? Obviously not giggable, but it's ok to practice on, chaindrive pedal is pretty comfortable
