I am using a garmin 405 and used it yesterday in the dublin marathon, my watch said 3hrs 59 mins and 58secs (which I was delighted with) but my chip time was 4hrs 2 mins and 51secs.

Anyone have any idea why, or has anyone had a similar problem?

I definetly started an finished my watch at the right time.

What does your clock time say? I think they have mixed up the two sets of results. It's not the first time they've done that. Frankly, the management of their website is rather sloppy. Did anyone else hear the frantic calls over the PA concerning people who tried to tie the chip to their shoe?

Again, that mess-up was caused by old/incorrect information on the website, because in previous years, the chip had to be tied to your shoe.

What distance did the watch say you ran?

It would'nt have blanked out at any stage would it?

Clock time says 4h07mins 49sec, when I ran through the park I checked the time off the seiko car and the watch was roughly 8 mins behind the "gun" time. Which now matches up.

    The watch says 26.2 miles.

Never noticed it blanking out but surely that would hae effected this distace too?

Just brain storming here (cant really give you a solid answer) but if Im not mistaken you actually run longer than 26.2. Garmin distance is often about 26.5 so the fact that the Garmin says 26.2. would not necessarily mean it didnt blank out (nor does it mean it did of course).

I have never used a Garmin so not sure how they work. I have heard of them blanking but does that effectr the time or just the distance?

EDIT: Yu didnt take a pitstop and stop your watch without thinking? Again just brainstorming but I have heard of people doing that as they are used to it from training.

Only a second different between my watch time and the chip time, the chip time is really listed under the "finish time" on the website though and the gun to finish time is the one under "chip time".

My 405 was within 3 seconds of the chip-time.

Bit of a mystery. Did you check your chip at the expo, ie. that your name came up on the screen? If that worked ok, I'd be inclined to trust the chip, and suspect your watch ...

I did take two pitstops in the park but I am sure I didn't stop the clock, 2mins 51 secs is a long auld pitstop????

I am baffled I feel a bit deflated cos I was delighed with my sub 4 hrs.

chip worked at the expo, I am inclined to go the other way and trust the watch just for my sanity!!!!

I think that some Garmins can be set up to stop the clock when you stop and then restart automatically. Sounds like that's what has happened. Read the manual and check if yours is set up this way.

And the finish/chip times are reversed on the web-site.

Do you have your 405 set to auto-pause?
I normally keep this feature turned on during training (e.g. for crossing at traffic lights etc.), but turned it off for the Marathon, as unfortunately nature breaks have to be included in your finish time (damn you, foul bladder - cost me 1:30 minutes!!).

Thats what I was thinking. Two pitsops in the park and the standstill at the start could've done it in that case.

I am so annoyed, the auto pause was on! I don't believe it, I ran to the watch to the second (as you can see from the 2 second gap)

now I'm really annoyed about the start being messed up!

Sound like the auto pause would have triggered at the start and possibly going under the N4 then which could account for a bit more of the time difference.

So how did the beers go for everyone last night, i was wrecked after my day so ended up in bed at 9pm last night. Think i'm going to run belfast in May now.

I was very late starting... everyone was gone ahead (empty street ) And now my chip time is the same as the finish time.... 15 mins out!!. And yes I definitely crossed the mat at the start. Looks like it didn't read my chip though? I'm also using a Garmin 405 and that was correct.

Maybe they had turned the start mat off when the rest of teh field went through?

Maybe, but there was about 5-7 other people crossing around the same time as me so I think they should have left it on until the rolled it up.. if thats what happened?

Did you hear it going beep as you went over it? I'm guessing it was quiet enough at that point for you to hear it, I could certainly hear all the other mats beeping franticly when I was crossing them.

The last five or six miles is absolutely dead - not what you need when you get that far in. Plus, the year I did it there was a bomb scare during the race which added half a mile on - my first ultramarathon!
