Symphonic metal? For me that just screams Nightwish. Tis practically heavy metal opera, romanticism included.

I'll throw you something a little different. I find too often that Symphonic metal is a style that's dominated by female vocalists, so I'm going to say to you check out Evergrey, because not only do they have some great music that's very melodic, but singer/guitarist Tom S. Englund has an absolutely fantastic voice, and they often use backing singers that give them a rather unique sound.

If you liked Preacher, the same writer did a recent run on the punisher, it was pretty awesome.

If you want something big and would take forever to get through every part of, I found Marvels civil war arc very good in parts. It is at least engaging in the most age old of comic book traditions, dealing with extremely serious issues which are taboo in america and getting away with it by saying "it's only comic books".

Eddie Izzard (in the top 5 of all time imo)
Demetri Martin/Mitch Hedburg/Emo Phillips (classic style jokes, but very very funny, who wrote which ones is a hot topic of debate but forget that and enjoy the funnies)
Stewart Lee (Mind of a genius)
Reginald D Hunter, Steve Hughes, Glenn Wool - 3 guys on the way to the big time right now, already pretty big in England but all well worth checking out. Probably my 3 favourite comedians working today

On the Irish front keep an eye out for Jarleth Regan, Robbie Bonham and Colum Mc Donnell, all top notch comedians
