What's peoples opinions on Russell Brand? I think he's an exceptionally quick witted comic. He comes out with some of the most obscure stuff in his routines, often to the bemusement of some. His work on MTV was good and his stand up is even better IMO. I was having a watch of his stand up show 'Shame' earlier and its good. Part 1 here:

On the basis of his radio show with Ross last week, he should be prosecuted and sacked.

Don't think much of him at all.

I dont use the TWAT word lightly, and I wont here either - Brand is a cretinous twat who may have some talent but preferes to be a controversialist. That stunt with Woss was beyond the joke.

zero entertainment value, I would say he mainly appeals to young teens who think they are smarter then they are.

he's a grade A Plonker in my book.

For the record, I knew nothing of his stunt with Ross before posting this topic. I was basing my opinions solely on his MTV work and stand up.

He's clever and witty, one of the funniest people ever. I went to see his show in the National Stadium and read his book, fantastic. Some of his best work was on Big Mouth.

As posted in a thread i started early today

    BBC apoligises over Brand joke

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7692911.stm

Just reading about the antics of Brand and Ross in leaving lewd comments on Andrew Sachs answer phone re- his grandaughter you have to ask who do these idiots think they are ?.How low do you need to go for cheap laugh just to up the ratings ? .You may or may not be a fan of Brand (or Ross ) but this is just the latest in his schoolboy pranks that would have got anybody else a hefty fine ot at worse a jail sentence. This comes on brands other recent gaffs were he made hoax call to the police during a stage show in Northampton and the Americans are not to fond of him for his comments about George Bush at a live tv ceremony (even if many might agree with him ) .But another apology gets him of the hook .Now i like the J Ross show and watch it every week but he had the the king of swear words , Gorden Ramsey on the other week ,alongside another fan of the F word ,Ricky Gervais and between them it seemed a competition to see who could out swear the other using the F word ( ok, ramsey surprisingly was not as bad as the other two on the night ) .The you tube apology by the two is in poor taste and not very sincre

I'm in the Russell Brand is a TWAT category too. I have one thing to be grateful to him for, and that is that he cured me of my addiction to Big Brother via his inexecrable show that followed the main series.

He's a complete f*cking tosser. And who the f*ck are Woss & Brand to be slagging off a 78 yo Sachs? WTF? Is that suppossed to be comedy?

In the UK it's illegal to make obscene and/or nuisance phone calls.

Have you even heard the recording? It couldn't be classed as obscene by any but the most prudish, and certainly not by the law. And although I'm by no means an expert on the british legal system, I think you would be hard pressed to describe it as a nuisance call either.

I'm no big fan of Brand, and I don't think either he or Ross should be too proud of the recent incident. But he is wittier than some people on this thread are giving him credit for, and I do enjoy his annual collaboration with Noel Fielding on that end of year quiz thing channel 4 do.

I think he is a right ould fool to be honest but he is ok at what he does. Main reason I dont like him is because he tries so hard to be different (which isnt a bit thing) that he just looks stupid.
The thing with Ross was a bit stupid but tis nowhere near as bad as Tommy tiernen taking the piss outta down syndrome people, knackers and bikers in rehab cos of crashes.

Sachs is a real gentleman, Brand will never be capable of that. Never laughed at anything from the twat - at him, yes.

    Have you?

    "I f***ed your grand-daughter?" Not obscene/nuisance?

First off, from my memory, Brand didn't say that, Ross said 'He fcuked your grand-daughter'. And as said previously, its highly unlikely that would be classed as obscene/nuisance under the law. Not much point arguing about it though, I fully agree it was pretty tasteless and classless. Just not illegal.

If that's not obscene then nothing is .Was kinda indifferent to Brand who see's himself as some modern day Oscar wilde but is really a bad mans Casanova ,and Ross beneath that pseudo charm use's the cheap sexual innuendou for laughs .They both imo compliment each other in the very bad taste/ shyte dept .

    ..................................................................

Anyway, I don't mind Brand and he's quite funny at times, and then other times he's not and is just a twat! He's a good presenter, he brings something different and has plenty of screen presence.

Brand is fantastic.. without doubt, the most quick-witted comedian working today. His podcast / radio show with Matt Morgan is unmissable.

And although he does come across as arrogant and pompous more often that not, I think it's part of his appeal and to be perfectly honest, I'd consider him a bit of a twat but a very quick-witted and talented twat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,229 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

I find Russell Brand manically entertaining, but Jonathan Woss is a total ranker with a boring innuendo obsession!

After the Andrew Sachs thing however, they should both be strung up by the balls.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 183 ✭✭JDLK

He is talented, quick witted and intelligent but unfortunately his routine is becoming old. Its still amusing but the whole "intellectual libertine" thing requires a bit of literary backup to seperate him from the run of the mill sleazbag comics and put him into genius status.

Brand has a similar quick wit and mastery over colourful vocabulary that Wilde had but alot of Brands popularity is based on his image whereas Wilde backed his up with works of lierature. As he gets older, fatter, balder he will lose his charisma. Imagine an aul fella doing his gags it just wouldnt work, whereas Wildes works have stood the test of time

He needs to convert his talent into a significant work or he'll just be an also ran comic. His contributions so far do not look promising; "My Booky Wook" and his films are not very good.

I find him hilarious. Probably my favourite entertainer around at the minute. Love his podcasts. Ponderland is back on Thursday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

Have never been able to watch more than 5 minutes of his "cleverness". Don't believe he's funny at all. He has never made me laugh and seems to be famous for being a twat. His latest stunt just reinforces that in my view. From what I have seen of the clip of the piece he did, it was appallingly juvenile even without the abuse. He looked and sounded like a deranged Barney.

As for Ross, well he's has always been a tosser but one with genuine talent when he applies himself and steers clear of the temptation to behave like a reject from a US teen movie. A big boot up the a**e out of the BBC might do him the world of good. :D

always considered brand to be a grade a twat. as for ross used to like his show on friday nights but ut has now just become one innuendo after another. grow up boys

I've seen his stand-up routine and it's actually very average. I think his radio show is actually a lot better than his stand-up and can be quite entertaining even though he's probably the most self-absorbed person you'll ever listen to. If you can get over that though it's not bad.

His fame seems to come from being constantly in the tabloids over in the UK as opposed to his actual talent as a comedian. Most of his fans seem to be teenage girls which probably explains why he gets his hole so much and then broadcasts it to the world.

I don't think Bill Hicks would have thought much of him.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,815 ✭✭✭Charlie

Used to think he was a right aul twat. However, after getting into the podcast, and watching the superb Ponderland (which I recommend all his doubters check out on Youtube), I would have a lot of time for him.

Unlike some of his peers, even when he is 'controversial' he never does it with nastiness, or out of spite. If you take away all the makeup and quirky clothes, theres a decent and normal bloke there, who is an absolute hoot to listen to.

I like Brand's material a lot, though his persona is very flavour of the month stuff, but what he did to Sachs really is despicable beyond words. I never really "got" Ross's appeal, though I've only seen his show once or twice.

Not into his stand up but like his radio show and was listening to it, it was a disgrace alright, i think he is losing it to be honest, getting very manic (even compared to his usual manic self)

If anyone is going to youtube ponderland you might as well go the whole hog and just look for "In bed with me dinner" instead, Bob Mills show from 90's, you might see an uncanny resemblance between the two:eek:

I find him very entertaining but I must say I think the latest stunt he did with Jonathan Ross was very dickish and totally devoid of humour and merit.

If Sachs reacted to these calls as funny and recognised them as a joke everyone would be thinking very funny/great joke but since he is "upset" about it everyone now hates Ross and Brand....Come on get a grip people its a joke.

a 78 year old man gets upset when 2 "comedians" decide to leave abusive messages on his phone and broadcast it going on about him & his family and him dropping dead when he finds out that one of them shagged his granddaughter

Whats wrong with him? he should get a sence of humour transplant:rolleyes:

    It was bullying!
I listened to it before it kicked off and i knew it would be trouble(not because of this, just like the show)
+ a lot of people are getting worked up about it because it wasnt live and
went through an editing process, even if Sachs laughed it off the fact that it was broadcast would have caused trouble anyway, If they had smaller contracts/audiences they would probably have been sacked, editor of the show probably will be!

Yeah everyone would have loved it wouldn't they? Calling up a guy in his late seventies and saying you slept with his granddaughter. The hallmark of comedic wit.

Always thought Russell Brand was over-rated as a performer and comedian and now it seems he's a thoughtless, insensitive little sh!t too. Bravo!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,082 ✭✭✭lostexpectation

it was woss who said it wasn't, but ya think brand would have learned since his run in with rod stewart, but i guess that's why ross said it. he was trying to take hte piss out of brand not the tastless comic actor.

I'm a huge fan of his. He's incredibly witty and intelligent.

Also I don't know why everybody is getting so angry about that phone call. Sure it was stupid, but people are acting like they stabbed him or something.

When a person gets old, it's sometimes quite easy to finish them off when they're subjected to pressure. Who knows, it might be the same as stabbing him.

If I was in the UK, paying a tv licence fee, I'd want to stab Woss and Brand - and get a licence refund.

Most of the comments on here are about Brand's ability as a comedian. I made a vain attempt to watch him recently but after 5 minutes of him reading about himself in a newspaper with an audience in hysterics I would have been looking for my money back. Not remotely funny at all.

The phone call , aside from the offensive nature of it, distinctly shows a pair of complete halfwits at work.
