Double Christmas Payment

    Does anyone know if the double social welfare payments are still going ahead this year what with the new budget and all?

    Also, does anyone know what will happen with rental allowance payments?

    IICR rental allowances are paid on a Thursday (or so I'm told) so this year Christmas Day falls on a Thursday, obviously people cannot collect their rental allowance on Christmas day - so do they get a double payment the week before to overcome this, as in on Thurs Dec 18th? Or how does it work?

    Thanks for any info!

    why not?

    You should ask the Dept. of Social Welfare

    The rules are that those on JA are only entitled to the christmas bonus if they are long-term unemployed which is for 390 days or more

    "
    Examples of Christmas bonus payments
    Some typical weekly social welfare rates (maximum) include:
    • State Pension (Contributory) (€223.30);
    • tate Pension (Non-Contributory) (€212.00);
    • One Parent Family Payment (€197.80);
    • Jobseeker's Allowance (long-term) (€197.80).
    Examples of how claimants getting the maximum rate of payment will benefit from the Bonus are as follows:
    • a couple with three children on long-term Jobseeker's Allowance will receive €802.20, which includes a bonus of €401.10.
    • a person getting the One Parent Family Payment with two dependent children will receive €491.60, including a bonus of €245.80.
    • a person getting the State Pension (Contributory) living alone will receive €462.00 which includes a bonus of €231.00
    (All rates are calculated on maximum rates.)

    Yea a bonus to help people get through the xmas financially. But it has to be said it sort of sums the government up, I know its great to get it but people working full weeks and more get sweet FA at xmas and those who do nothing get an extras weeks payment. I'm not targeting anyone I was very grateful to receive it myself

    When I was working I think I got that extra weeks wages, I know everybody else did but I had gone home sick that week. Also you don't have to be on longterm to get the bonus, I got it last year and at the time I wasn't on it long. I think it should be coming in tomorrow but I haven't gone near the back to find out if it is in early

    I think you must be signing on for 9 months or so. I did hear before it was only available to long term applicants.

    For the christmas double payment??

    I know someone who signed on weeks ago and has recieved it, though they were out of the country for 9 months +.

    Not that they checked that they were.

    Just a point to note (from a frustrating personal experience) - Long term unemployed is 15 months NOT 390 days.
    The 390 days are calculated EXCLUDING sundays
    So just beware, you cannot claim after 390 calendar days!
    Complicated or what. This minor detail but very relevant piece of information was nowhere to be found on Citizens advice website or welfare site (I have aske dthem both to change it)

    Yes. I sent a wee note of my frustration to them!
    I think they have changed it now. Refences to 390 days have been changed to 15 months.
    My query was initially about fuel allowance.

    the 15 month rule can't be right because I know people who only signed on since the summer & they got double payment.

    i was on BTEA while in college & they changed it straight over to the dole when i finished in may yet i didnt get double payment.

    is it just luck getting it or what???

    It's the difference between jobseekers allowence and jobseekers benifit. The people you know must have jobseekers allowance where as you have jobseekers benifit. If you didn't have to fill out loads of forms when getting the dole your on benifit not allowance.

    I just got a letter in the post saying that it had gone up from 13euro to 18 euro and they'd be taking the five euro off the weekly payment from january 1st. This is in Cork, not sure if it's the same in Dublin?

    I’m on jobseekers allowance witch I collect from the post office every Tuesday (as we all do). I got a double week at the start of December as most of us would have but when I collected my money today (Tuesday the 16th of December) I got another double week.

    I was told by the girl in the post office that she thinks it’s the last payment before Christmas that’s why it’s a double week and I wouldn’t get paid next week. She couldn’t tell me for certain if this was the case and no one else in the post office could tell me so I went to the social welfare office to ask them and of course it was closed. I tried ringing them but they told me I have to ask at the local office which is shut.

    Does anyone know if it is the case that there will be no social welfare payments next week? If this is the case can anyone tell me when we will start to get paid again?

    Thanks

    Just a quick reply to anyone who read my post yesterday about the double Christmas payment. I was on to the social welfare office this morning. I was told that anyone on jobseekers allowance will get two weeks pay this week and won’t get paid next week. We will start to get paid again on the 30th of December.

    It doesn’t make any sense if you ask me. It would make more sense to get paid two weeks next week so we will have money over Christmas and then start to get paid again in the first week of January. But that’s just me.

    I don’t know if this applies to everyone on the social so if you’re worried about your payment I’d advise getting on to your local social welfare office.

    What are the requirements to apply for rent allowance?

    Because I have heard lots of different things and i dont know what to believe.
    heard i wont get it because im not in my current residence long enough
    (2 and a half months) to be entitled and because my rent (€92.p.w) is too high?
