    Hey guys,

I'm looking for some feedback on the forum.

    Good or bad.

I'm mainly interested in what you'd like to see done in the forum in the future.

The forum's changed alot in the 4 months it's existed even, and it's been a learning experience for me, and I welcome any feedback.

    kthnxbai!

    hey,

i think there's a top heavy feel to the forum. everything seems to go on or be centred around the lair.

i don't know how it would be achieved but i'd like to see some other threads getting some more action or even some more new threads being created.

i'll get the thinking cap on to see if i can think of anything else.

This had also occured to me.

I thinking maybe we should clarify what the forum is about, spooky gothy nighty things and staying up late.

Of course, defining what "staying up late" topics are is another question.

I think there are way too many stickies in the forum, it kinda detracts from any new/active topics.

agreed, i think the only threads that should be stickied are the charter and the mcd event thingy.

the lair is a very popular thread and really doesn't need to be a sticky imo.

Also true. I'll look at trimming them down.

Maybe some unity between the mods. How can one mod lock a thread that a fellow mod has been posting in?

Make the rules as clear as possible and stick to them. (eg, the flirting rule)

Why was the 'whats on your bedside locker' thread locked, when a wrestling one is left open?

How can a mod justify threatening to 'infract or ban' a poster for pointing out an MCD reference? (because they missed it?)

There seems to be little or no communication between all of you.

For what it's worth Doom, I do think you've done a good job and have done your part well. You've dealt with any issues I had well so, thank you.

Doom, you're an amazing mod and you've done yourself proud nurturing the nocturnal forum.

Mods lack harmony, seen quite a few occasions of where a mod is participating in a thread and another comes along and locks it for being un-nocturnal(how fascist that sounds, it isnt THAT bad :p)

Unsticky everything but: Charter+MCD events+new users. The Lair will be kept up by posts, as should other stickied threads. Otherwise, they shouldnt be sticked anyway :)

Let more general threads/chat back into the forum, take a more hands off approach, and for the love of god: When one poster steps over the bounds, warn THAT poster rather than banning the doing/mentioning of things completely.

I think everyone has shown they be can be treated like an adult here, even the younger posters :)

i agree with this, just like to add a point about the "locker thread" and the "wrestling thread"

the wrestling thread is needed i think, it keeps a lot of the wrestling stuff away from other parts of the forum and due to it being shown live here at 1am etc it's nocturnal enough.

i didn't see what was wrong with the locker thread only for the fact that maybe orestes that locked the thread thought it was an what's in your locker (as in a work/college locker) and not what's on your locker.

but from my time as a mod and when things are hectic, it can be difficult. but i think there needs to be a bit more interaction with users of the forum i.e. reporting posts etc. you know have a whole community vibe like how other forums run on boards

I agree with most of the points brought up:

    too many stickies
mods should be more unified on how they mod the forum
things should have a tiny bit more slack, accidents etc and allow more random chatter perhaps

I do think the Nocturnal Forums a good place

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 25,872 Mod ✭✭✭✭Doctor DooM

    Good points.

All listened to and taken on board, first thing I am going to try is I have unstickulated some of the stickies.

The wrestling thread is indeed there to stop people posting alot of wrassling stuff during the late shows in the lair.

Also, SP, I know what you are saying about leniency, but when you start showing leniency you get accused of favouritism, especially when it is a regular, despite knowing its an accident. So it is a catch 22 situation.

Not saying I don't see your point, or get it, just explaining the why fores.

Just to pick up on this, when a mod behaves as you describe above, the instant response of the people who have misbehaved is: why is it not in the charter if I am not supposed to do it?

Again not saying this because I disagree, saying it because I'd love to hear a valid solution. :)

This is something else I'd like to hear from people on. No users in the Nocturnal forum seem to report in the same way other forum posters do. It can make the mods life difficult.

Eh, I like how this forum's run, it's rapid growth and it's ongoing popularity is a sign that something's going right. ;)

Let's just hope any outstanding issues can be dealt with quickly.

There has been less worth reporting lately, as the forum's matured people are behaving, although there's still upwards of 600 posts a day so it's not like it's slowed down.

This threads here to deal with outstanding issues, basically. :)

Doom i think the reason why though has got a lot to do the way things ran in the forum and the lair especially (afterall it is the hub of the forum).

Rules and decisions were made up on the fly on thread it was undoubtedly a organic process but let me pick an example at the sports rule.

after repeated results of sports fixtures being spoiled all sports talk was banned. the rule was made up on the lair, without any consultation with mods and users and was just set it stone to be no sports talk.

judging this and other rules made up on the fly i often question myself how strict is the rule, because some of them are seriously strict where others are turned a blind eye to. where's the line drawn?

now i see sports talk going on in the lair sometimes now after the rule was made (although the spoiling of scores has become almost non existant which is good), and as the rule states there's no sports talk allowed whatsoever. but when it's overlooked on several ocassions i don't see the point in reporting it and also due to the high volume of posts going through the lair is often forgotten about before any mods have a chance to read the reported post and by the time they do and act on it the user could have forgotten what they said along with the users of the forum. it just seemed like that it was only sports that mods cared about were being pulled up, if i started a post with the handball results of the wicklow region, i don't think anything would be done.

that being said i think the forum is growing and i hope it continues to, there's just a few issues that need to be sorted out and i like the way you are taking an active role in this.

Because I'm a firm believer that very little in life is black & white :)

Let's say someone goes overboard flirting on the lair, send that person a nice PM asking them to tone it down and respect the fact that it's a public forum.
Jokingly flirting is great fun, as I'm sure almost everyone here would agree - it shouldn't be banned because one person takes it too far.

When someone asks "Why isnt it in the charter?" You can always say "Because flirting isn't banned, taking it too far is". Generally people respect mods on this site, and if you have a continuous problem with users I'm sure there are tools at your disposal to deal with them rather than denying whole topics of conversation to all users of the forum :)

PS: The Nerin+MizzLolly feud looks really bad for the whole forum, I'm not the first person to notice Nerin generally only putting his modcap on as soon as Lolly steps over the line - and Lolly is hardly blameless in it either, much as I wub her she does love a good argument when she thinks she's right(much like myself, alas :()

Interestingly enough, the sports rule was there since the original prototype charter in the nocturnal request thread, so it's not one of the "organically grown" rules. :)

Here's something which is part of the problem here.

It's impossible for the mods to read every single post in the lair. There's just too much. So breaches are going to be missed. Especially if posts aren't reported. So there is going to be cases where posts which break the rules get left, and it looks like were not enforcing it.

I can only apologise if rules have been confusing etc in the past, it is a symptom of the explosion in size. We'll have to look at a way to stabilise the changing of the charters etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,878 ✭✭✭Rozabeez

Unsticking The Lair was a good opinion imo, I was a fairly regular poster in here for awhile and have drifted away for a few reasons, not having the time to keep up with that place being one of the main ones!

The other threads just seem to have posters for a few days and die out, but I don't really see what we can do about it. Maybe be more welcoming to newer posters to the forum? I know many of us/you have become sort of close knit, but in a lot of cases that can discourage new posters as they can become overlooked etc.

I'm sure many of you will disagree, but that's just how I see it.

oh i didn't realise it was one of the original rules, tbh i think though a spoiler tag on anything to do with sport and that be enough.

i totally understand that mods can't read every single post in the lair, it's just not feasible as you'd need to get a wage for that as it would be a full time job. i don't know what can be done about it but looking at this from a regular users eyes seeing somethings get pulled up on and other things not kinda sends out a message to the regular user "will this make a difference", again i don't know what could be done to minimise this though but i guess this is what this thread is for, for everyone to brain storm ideas and come up with the best solution for going forwards and i believe if we all put our heads to it, we'll find the closest solution that suits the majority.

there's no need to apologise doom, i can only imagine how much of a strain being a mod on this forum can be at times due mainly to its size and the way things are dealt with here only go to compliment yourself.

great to see you don't hold grudges  the reason helena was warned, was because she wouldn't shut up. Yeah,i didn't know she was talking about an mcd event, fairplay to the user who pointed out it was. And when was told,i deleted everything, which she kept quoting, thereby technically undeleting it. ''Get over it''? That's the best you can do? You failed to mention that you used that same childish attitude on her that time aswell. If I remember correctly, you warned her by saying, ''no mcd references dammit''. Why the need for mentioning it this way?

I remember being asked nicely by SDooM to be careful of which bands I mentioned. My post was snipped, I apologised and it was forgotten. He didn't feel the need to swear or use a childish tone. He seen a problem, snipped it, informed me and dealt with it how a moderator is supposed to. There was no ego-tripping or sarcasm on his part and I have no issue with how SDooM does his job as a moderator here.

Considering you yourself referenced an MCD event that particular time, admitting you had made a simple mistake would have been the best thing to do. Not getting sarcastic and displaying once again that childish behaviour you cant seem to control.

If I remember correctly wasn't your childishness brought into question in feedback not so long ago?

A post, if thought through fully, will speak for itself. You do not need to resort to sarcasm or childishness Nerin.

I know I'm not alone on this particular issue.

Yeah it does look bad. Again, this has been mentioned to me before. People have noticed the attitude problem. I agree, I do argue back. It's frustrating when you've got a valid point to make but you cant make it without being told in the most immature manner to take it to feedback. That's a total cop out on the mod's behalf in my opinion, there's no middle ground. As you said yourself Kev, it's either argue on thread (as I have done) or go to feedback and cause a big, messy headache!

If some of you aren't careful, this will turn into a mod-bashing thread rather than a brainstorming thread.

Calling Nerin's way of modding childish is just an interpretation tbh, all mods have their own way of doing things, and I don't think he means to cause offence, it's like mock-grumpiness (lulz) and probably shouldn't be taken as seriously as some people seem to. I find that it makes his modding less formal and easier to take if it's just a warning etc.

Damnit considered swearing? Ok!? That was meant as a joke, and then she didn't let it die,and then you came in all guns blazing with your own sarcasm and sniping comments. I don't expect everyone to know all unmentionable events are, because i don't,but i expect them to at least respect that having to delete all the comments is a bit of work, especially mobile, and not continuously quote the posts that needed deletion.

i see where you're coming from roza, but if a user thinks they are being unfairly treated by a mod then it's only right that they are going to speak their mind when the occasion arises. i know i'd do the same as would 80-90% of the people on boards would do.

you mention that calling a mods way of modding childish is just an interpretation, that it is, but as the thread was created for the forum moderators to get feedback then a users interpretation should be seen as feedback in my personal opinion.

Not mod bashing at all Roe. I've expressed how well I feel SDooM deals with the forum already. :)

Yes, you're right, it is an interpretation. Bang on but it's one that's been made by more than just me. That's all my point is. Nothing to do with mod bashing at all.

I said, ''you might want to edit your own post so ;)''. How was that sniping or sarcastic?

Again, this is taking the whole thing off topic for the sake of one of us winning!

I admit to doing this so I'm not going to argue with you. I think my point is valid. I think how you dealt with it was all wrong. We're not going to agree on that so for the sake of this thread and its intended purpose I think it is best that we don't humour it anymore.

I would just say meself that who ever is as fault in this one, and I am sure nerin doesn't think he is perfect and can't listen to criticism of his mod style, this issue is hurting the forum and the grown up thing to do here would be to let it drop.

There's anger in those last couple of posts and if you want it to be bashed out reasonably thats no problem, but you're not doing yourselves any good circling the drain on this.

A step before "If you have a problem with any moderating decision of any sort, start a thread on feedback and cause a huge furore" would be nice.

It's a bit **** to ask people to open themselves up to the can of worms that is Feedback if they have the slightest problem on the forum.

Mods arent infallible, I'm sure they'll admit that but the current system of "Take it to feedback if you have a problem" pretty much makes almost any mod decision unquestionable. Really, who's going to take it to feedback and what exactly would that solve? These things will fester to be honest.

True that, I feel that things can be resolved in a neater and less public manner if it's done over pm.

Surely the step before is to PM the mod(s), courteously ofc, and try to sort out the issue calmly?

Interestingly enough, the sports rule was there since the original prototype charter in the nocturnal request thread, so it's not one of the "organically grown" rules. :)
Just picking up on that, as far as I remember the rule in the original charter was no threads on sport.
Maybe this is where confusion arose, confusion might be the wrong word, but breach of the boundaries at least - there is a difference between posts on sport and starting a thread.
But the charter has been modified and I completely understand rules is rules and charters are essential in forums and of course there are other fora to discuss ones particular interests.
However in threads such as the Lair where conversation flows particular rules will inhibit the conversation.
It'll be interesting to see how this feedback pans out and well done for seeking it.

One last thing, I love/hate all the nocturnal mods equally;):D

Sports- from my point of view, anyway- are a special case because of two things:

    1) Discussion of sports can be extremely, extremely excluding compared to other topics.

    2) Football in particular encourages a type of childish and tribal posting which quite frankly I am not paid enough to deal with and has lead to the current difficulties in the soccer forum.

I updated the charter slightly to show what kind of threads and topics are up for grabs in the nocturnal forum. Feedback appreciated on that.

thanks doomy, that's cleared up a lot on the whole sports thing.

also a very minor point, perhaps you could edit the title of the the forum charter thread with todays date just to make people more aware that it has been updated.

    good work though.

Okay, that is an interesting opinion, interesting to know why the mods feel the rule is necessary. I'll take it that is the end of the sports discussion;)
I just noticed the updated spruced up charter today, it's a lot clearer now, well done.

I used to frequent this forum a fair bit, more viewing than contributing.

The forum has made it's own path, however due to the amount of moderators with their own unique style of moderating it has confused some people. Me included. Some are quick to action, others more laid back. both 2 sides of the coin. This confuses the hell out of people. Even if there guidelines in place different people take them up the wrong way even the moderators.

I won't be popular for my following suggestion :(
However i feel it needs to be said... possibly a moderator change up?

Ones with similar styles because 2 complete different styles mess people up and confuses them, and in turn effects the forum negatively. Which has been noticed with regular posters not posting as of late.

Anyone who has had dealings with me knows im not out to cause trouble, and this isnt a jab at any of the guys here. Just seeing it from an outsiders point of view is all.

Just to clarify, I don't think any of the current regs would abuse being able to chat constantly about football, but you just know people who aren't allowed in soccer would find their way here if it was allowed completely without censure.

I'm looking for some feedback on the forum.
I'm mainly interested in what you'd like to see done in the forum in the future.
The forum's changed alot in the 4 months it's existed even, and it's been a learning experience for me, and I welcome any feedback.
First of all I think the mods have done a brilliant job,I think the addition of Orestes and Watna was a good move.

Don't try to argue in the forum.Do it in pm please.

I wondered this but it happens through out boards.

The making rules clearer is a hard one imo ,as there are lots of grey areas.I think this is where mods learn from experience and communication with other mods to make the right decision for that situation.

I don't agree with threatening people on threads , I BELIEVE A PM IS ALWAYS IN ORDER IN THIS CASE(it puts thread off course and cause bad moral)

    Tragedy wrote: »
Mods lack harmony, seen quite a few occasions of where a mod is participating in a thread and another comes along and locks it for being un-nocturnal(how fascist that sounds, it isnt THAT bad )

Unsticky everything but: Charter+MCD events+new users. The Lair will be kept up by posts, as should other stickied threads. Otherwise, they shouldnt be sticked anyway

Let more general threads/chat back into the forum, take a more hands off approach, and for the love of god: When one poster steps over the bounds, warn THAT poster rather than banning the doing/mentioning of things completely.

I think everyone has shown they be can be treated like an adult here, even the younger posters

Tragedy has brought up som excellent points ,and I do think everyone has shown they be can be treated like an adult here, even the younger posters, but the fact is the forum is growing faster than any forum on boards.
We cannot have a too laided back aproach as there will be cases where

"poster1:well what I did was only a little worse than poster2 and I got a warning for it".

Again I think it goes back to the grey area. Mods need greater communication before actions are took.A mod should try and pull another mod up if they go out of line.We are all people and have bad of days where things go wrong and we are not ourselves

Doom i think the reason why though has got a lot to do the way things ran in the forum and the lair especially (afterall it is the hub of the forum).

Rules and decisions were made up on the fly on thread it was undoubtedly a organic process but let me pick an example at the sports rule.

after repeated results of sports fixtures being spoiled all sports talk was banned. the rule was made up on the lair, without any consultation with mods and users and was just set it stone to be no sports talk.

judging this and other rules made up on the fly i often question myself how strict is the rule, because some of them are seriously strict where others are turned a blind eye to. where's the line drawn?

now i see sports talk going on in the lair sometimes now after the rule was made (although the spoiling of scores has become
almost non existant which is good), and as the rule states there's no sports talk allowed whatsoever.
but when it's overlooked on several ocassions i don't see the point in reporting it and also due
to the high volume of posts going through the lair is often forgotten about before any mods have a chance to read the
reported post and by the time they do and act on it the user could have forgotten what they said along with the users of the forum.
it just seemed like that it was only sports that mods cared about were being pulled up, if i started a post with the handball results of the wicklow region, i don't think anything would be done.
What Cremo says is true.Like a good few of the rules they were made of the cuff .

I think there should be a more hands off aproach in this sence. If they do it by accident ,a quick pm will sufficice instead of a warning .

    If it continues a warning/infraction

As was said before, most of us are adult enough to know were to draw the line and I haven't seen much of this ,but I do think that continuous team slagging should lead to warnings

Yeah this happens a lot in my opinion and I don't like the way the forum seems a bit one dimensional,I think there is a responsiblity for regulars to post in the rest of the forum and not just the lair,it can put people off the forum as the lair maybe too big for them
    Tragedy wrote: »
Because I'm a firm believer that very little in life is black & white

Let's say someone goes overboard flirting on the lair, send that person a nice PM asking them to tone it down and respect the fact that it's a public forum.
Jokingly flirting is great fun, as I'm sure almost everyone here would agree - it shouldn't be banned because one person takes it too far.

When someone asks "Why isnt it in the charter?" You can always say "Because flirting isn't banned, taking it too far is". Generally people respect mods on this site, and if you have a continuous problem with users I'm sure there are tools at your disposal to deal with them rather than denying whole topics of conversation to all users of the forum

PS: The Nerin+MizzLolly feud looks really bad for the whole forum, I'm not the first person to notice Nerin generally only putting his modcap on as soon as Lolly steps over the line - and Lolly is hardly blameless in it either, much as I wub her she does love a good argument when she thinks she's right(much like myself, alas )

You had the black and white thing posted before i could finish this ,I know a little long.
What you mentioned kind of goes with the point I made earlier about Poster1 commentins on poster 2 and this is where he laid back approach gets grey,I think regular posters should have some responsiblity and report the post and let the mods handle this situation. If there is greater communication between them as highlighted it will be easier to handle these situations.
    Rozabeez wrote: »
If some of you aren't careful, this will turn into a mod-bashing thread rather than a brainstorming thread.

Calling Nerin's way of modding childish is just an interpretation tbh, all mods have their own way of doing things, and I don't think he means to cause offence, it's like mock-grumpiness (lulz) and probably shouldn't be taken as seriously as some people seem to. I find that it makes his modding less formal and easier to take if it's just a warning etc.

<Finished discussing mod tactics, please nobody hurt me>
Agreed,I have been refreshing and adding to my post and I don't like the way Nerins modding
is coming into question.I think every mod here is still learning the best way to approach situations
and unforunately there is only one way to become a good mod and that is with practice and experience.
I for one think he is doing an excellent job and the only thing I find fault with is the way he didn't bring his discusion with mizzlolly to pm faster.
    Rozabeez wrote: »

I agree best way to handle thing is PM the mods .They say it all the time and always sorted my complaints/queeries in a polite fashion(and believe me I bring up things)

I also think there is a responsiblity for everyone who has been welcomed into the forum to welcome others into a forum.

When this place was just running I tried to be a welcoming as possible. Also help out with the nocturnal names. It's fun guys and it really is a good introduction into the forum
Try not to ignore newbs in the lair .I haven't seen it happen much but if a newb feels the way I do when I go in he BRGH bar I think we are taking a turn for the worst.
The mods are doing brilliant jobs, every single one of the .Any problems take it to PM and report the the post.Help them out and report the posts please. They don't get paid for this.

This Imo is one of the friendliest forums on boards. We need to keep it that way .I read a lot more than I post tbh.Actually I will say that I nearly keep up to date with the lair:eek:
Some additions made to the charter are too brash and they should be considered before made(and then changed later).

Ok that is all I have to say until say until I see the next up to date comment

    I <3 the nocturnal forum

Agreed, everyone wants a bit more unity in the moderating style, but this is something we'll have to bash out together amongst ourselves.

OK, I have no idea what's been said or is going on here.

    I'm saying this:

I will start banning the seven shades of **** out of this forum if I see more MCD, back seat modding, public mod bashing or anything else I deem out of order.

I am not here to be nice. I'm here to be a mod.

I will now be taking a much more active role in this board.

You have brought down the Wrath of Kharn.

And weather it be soccer or rugby or whatever takes your fancy of couse it's a great ice-breaker for posters unfamiliar with each other or those who dare I say would have little else in common. That's just my opinion.

Anyway I've said my piece. I hope this is all worked out and the forum can grow as a result. :)
