Food in Pubs

What do yis think of the popularity of this? I hate it.

I had the misfortune to be sitting at the bar in my local the other day...well actually 8:30 on a Saturday night, supping away on a nice pint of Guinness, when this middle-aged couple start tucking in to a curry right beside me....the smell and the noise, bloody awful.

Why don't they go to a restaurant? It's not like the pub was any cheaper...and sitting side by side at a bar? Not very romantic.

I wish this fad would die off soon. The only food served in a pub should be peanuts and crisps....ok, the occasional toasty but that's it.

They're just trying to diversify their income streams. It's either serve food or shut up shop, in many cases. People are drinking at home like never before for reasons that people are familiar with. Pubs are just trying to get more cash ch-chinging into their tills.

That couple must've had no class alright. From their point of view, they would've been better off in a restaurant.

Doesn't bother me tbh, If I'm away somewhere (for work) on my own, I'd rather have my nosh at the bar. Easier access to pint re-fills as well!

I think Irish pub cultures pretty unique in global terms in that a lot of them are drinking only places. Bars in most other countries have food based income as the primary and drink as the secondary.

Great profit margins on food, terrible one on pints. Doesn't bother me if a pub tries to make ends meet.

Sadly, there's a great market for decent simple pub food but few seem to do it. The Porterhouse does some decent pub food, but most places seem to miss the mark completely and end up serving shíte. I want bad food after the pub, not in the pub.

    Yep. Sad but true.
I blame the smoking ban and the drink driving crackdown for most of it but the publicans aren't entirely blameless.
Their logic of "I've less customers now so I'll increase the prices" doesn't make any sense, it should be the other way around. I hardly ever go to the local any more, too bloody expensive.

Yeah - curry chips and coleslaw in the nightclub when you're hammered, what more could ya want...:D
    nom nom nom.

I happen to like Pub Grub.
Nice to have a pint, newspaper and some food sometimes.
Especially a pub with a fire... now, where's me slippers?

Once I dont have to queue up for the food like a pensioner, I'm happy to have food in the pub.

In NZ you must serve food if you're open for business. 5 substantial options must be available. Some bars make money, off food. Others don't. Depends on how you market it.
Its a legal requirement. It has its pros and cons.
