    Hi guys,
I'm looking at buying a ceramic heater to heat around 900 square feet.
The heater I have in mind has a 2.8kw output.

No 1, would this be sufficient for this type of area to heat and..
No 2 , how much would it be to run this heater per hour, if anyone has the current kwh rating that would be great.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jon

No idea if it's enough to heat the area but the answer to Q2 is in your question.... 2.8kW uses 2.8kW per hour or 2.8kWh...;)
    i.e. 2.8 units per hour.

Aye, but does anyone know what the rate is from the ESB for a KWH? Maybe it's on their website. Am I right in saying if 1 kwh is say 60cent then for 2.8 you just multiply the 60 by 2.8k??

    Thanks

Yep, current domestic rate is around 15c/unit - read the exact figure from your bill or their site.

    1 unit = 1kWh

2.8kW load will cost you around 42c per hour.

No way of knowing how much heat you need for the space. Depends on what temperature you want the room, external temperature, U values of structure (insulation, windows etc), air change rates.

    Current Domestic Rates Including VAT
Domestic Night Saver Tariff - Day Rate 19c/kWh
    Standard Domestic - 18c/kWh

    In one hour you will use 1hr x 2.8 kW = 2.8kWh
    Per hour = €0.19 x 2.8kWh = €0.53

just to stick this in, the 2.8KW load is worst case. Depending on the heater used, it may not need to run at full capacity all the time, it may have a stat that turns it off and off again, or it may not need all its power to keep it at the desired temp.
