Beyond the Steps and the Music

    an exhibition of tango photographs

A collection of photographs capturing expressions of tango will beopened by Liam Ó Maonlaí in the Back Loft Gallery, off Dublin' sThomas Street, on the 23rd of October. The pictures reveal a widespectrum of the tango dance and music scene in Buenos Aries, theArgentinan home of tango. Photographer Marcelo Biglia has documented the movement's young andalternative side. While living in Ireland for 10 years, he saw tangoas an outdated dance form that has changed little since its heyday inthe 1930's. He was thus surprised to find, upon returning to visithis home city, that a whole new explosion of tango has taken place inrecent years. "Tango is now more diverse than ever before" heexplains. His evocative photographs show different aspects oftraditional tango alongside the very experimental new movement. The photos depict young people passionate about tango; electronic andaltrnative tango bands; and new trends that break the confines of thevery set formulations that normally define tango. The moretraditional movement is also explored in the exhibition, withstartling images of seasoned champions and dusty dance halls. Thephotographer's hand printed black and white photos give a unique depthand quality to the subjects. The exhibition transports us to a worldof nostalgia and passion, where the observer can construct their ownconcept around often surprising world of contemporary tango.
