Flash advice

    Hi all,
I have decided to buy a Canon Eos 1000D to mark my first foray into dSLRs. What I need to know is what kind of flash should I get for it. Considerations to keep in mind - camera will be used a lot indoors (extremely young family), I am pretty much a noobie so I may not appreciate all that a top end flash can offer. I guess price would also come into the equation but will not necessarily be the main deciding factor.

    Regards,
    Kevin.

Canon 430EX is canons entry level flash and should be what you want. About €200-250 new.

Since it looks like ill be getting a 5D what flash would you recommend for this ?

    580 EX II ?

(OP --sorry for hijacking the thread) !

I'm not really experienced enough to be recommending anything to anyone to be honest. All I was pointing out to the OP was canons entry level flash. I know Sigma do an even cheaper model but I have no idea if it's any good or not.

I suppose it all depends what you are using the flash for. I have a 430EX and it does the job fine for what I need it for which is indoor and fill. I don't know if it would be powerful enough for use in a very large church etc.

I also use a 350D so it doesn't look ridiculously big on top of it like a 580EX would. This obviously wouldn't be a problem with a 5D!

If a person is just looking for a little extra than the built in flash (which is quiet good anyways for most family based indoor stuff) then the 430 is good.

For anyone looking for more than just family based stuff, i.e serious amateur or pro then there is only one choice if sticking with a brand flash and thats the 580ExII regardless of Canon body.

430EX should be more than enough for him and should be cheaper to get now what with the 430EX II out now.

Since the 5D doesn't have weather sealing then save a bit of money and
get the original 580EX which doesn't have the seals and only a slightly
slower recycle time than the newer version. I'm not aware of any other
    significant differences...

EXII has better logic when calculating the emitted light for correct exposure - very useful especially for brides in white dresses.
It is another generation "inside" when used on cameras and lenses that support ETTL II.

The Canon 580 EX 11 is a superb flash. Spend the extra money and buy one (from one of the HK dealers on Ebay). You will never regret it.

Does anyone use Sigma EF 500 DG Super or Sigma EF 500 DG ST ??
I heard they are nearly identical to Canon’s 550EX...and twice cheaper

I have the 500 DG Super. It's build quality isn't a fraction as good as the Canon and it doesn't provide the consistent results of the latter. I've hung on to it in case I might ever need a back-up but as long as the Canon is functioning properly I don't think I'll ever use it again.
