    Hi i'm trying to calculate my Resting Metabolic Rate using the following formula:

    Age Men
    10-18 (body weight (kg) * 17.5) + 651
    19-30 (body weight (kg) * 15.3) + 679
    31-60 (body weight (kg) * 11.6) + 879

    However someone has told me that I should be using Lean Body Mass instead of body weight. Can anyone help me do this? as i dont know how to figure out a person's Lean Body Mass

    Lean mass is total weight minus bodyfat. So if you weight 200lb and your bodyfat is 20%, then your lean mass is 160lb.

    I agree that basing BMR on lean mass makes more sense. The Katch-McArdle formula does this.

    BMR (men/women) = 370 + (21.6 X lean body mass in kg)

    Then apply the activity modifier:
    # Sedentary (desk job, with little or no exercise) = BMR X 1.2
    # Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) = BMR X 1.375
    # Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) = BMR X 1.55
    # Very active (intensive exercise/sports 6-7 days/week) = BMR X 1.725
    # Extremely active (intensive daily exercise/sports & physical job or twice
    per day training for marathon, races, fitness contests, etc.) = BMR X 1.9
