It depends on where you are coming from. If it is outside the EU customs area its about 1 litre of spirits and 200 cigarettes or equivalent.

    Where are you coming from?

Coming back from the Canary Islands my friend's bags and my bag were searched. The Customs lad said we were allowed 800 cigarettes each but let us off with a warning and let us take the full 5000 through.
I believe you can get more through Belfast legally, up to 16 sleeves is the limit from some places.

im going to prague with the missus for a few days next week. All i know is that you will have to pay extra if the weight of your bag luggage exceeds so many kg's. Not sure either how much alcohol i can bring over in hand luggage

Be it either check-in or hand luggage you'll probably be stuck with weight limits before custom limits...

In the EU expect to get questioned if you have more than :

3200 cigarettes, 110 litres of beer or 10 litres of spirits

just after finding the customs website, here is the full info for in the EU
Goods bought in another EU country

You will not be charged any extra duty or VAT on purchases where the duty and VAT has been paid (for example, goods bought in shops, supermarkets, etc.) in another EU country, provided the goods are for your personal use.

If your purchases are equivalent to or less than the quantities set out in the table below, they will usually be regarded as being for your personal use. If you exceed these quantities, you may have to demonstrate at Customs that the goods are for your personal use.

    Goods Maximum quantity allowed
    Cigarettes 800
    Cigarillos 400
    Cigars 200
    Smoking tobacco 1 kg
Spirits (whiskey, vodka, gin, etc.) 10 litres
Intermediate Products (e.g. sherry, port, etc., excluding sparkling wine) 20 litres
Wine (only 60 litres of sparkling wine allowed) 90 litres
    Beer 110 litres

There's a few exceptions to the EU rule for "special countries", ie those where cigs and booze are really cheap...
It should be noted that there are specific limits on the amount of tobacco products you can bring into Ireland for your personal use that have been purchased in the following EU countries.

Estonia - 200 cigarettes OR 250g smoking tobacco*
Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, - 200 cigarettes*

If your bags are checked through from NY, you'll have to go through the green or red channels.

If you collect your bags in London and check in again, you can use the blue channel.
