Matching Algorithm Suggestions

I want to create a matching algorithm that would help students choose a college course.
Each course has subjects associated with it.
Students enter the subjects they want to study into the search.

What do you think would be a good and accurate way to give each course a match percentage based on the student's input?
I could put a weight on the subjects related to each course? (For example for an accountancy course the subject "accounting" should have a larger weight than say "marketing").
I could put a weight on the student's subject choices? For example make them choose their subjects in order of preference.

How many subjects would you associate with each course? Would you divide them into certain levels of importance? How many subjects should the students enter into the search and should they be in order of preference?

I want your ideas to make this search as accurate and informative as possible!

Sounds more like a computer science problem than a maths problem. Forgive my cynicism, but it also sounds suspiciously like a university project!

Sounds suspiciously like a project to me too. Locked temporarily while I contact DanCorb.
