Ladies and gentlemen, we are almost there. Eventually!!!

If you keep files flowing, the book could be ready at the beginning of the next month. There are only two pages left, so far. And we would like to have some kind of information on those two pages. One is in the front and one is at the back.

Could you think a little and create description of this project and SSF, please?

Feel free to discus here, what information should be posted at the beginning of the book (more SSF, less Boards) and what should be at the back of the book.

Thank you a lot for your ideas, support and help.

Ehm, there is a little lack of ideas, suggestions and volunteers...

ThOnda I think a pm to DeVore asking him to provide a paragraph on SSF would be in order. If my memory serves me correctly it was his brainchild to set it up and he would be in the best position to give a proper history of the endeavour.

If he is willing to do this we should base anything else around this. I will try and cobble together a general description this evening if I can get a few minutes free.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is SSF ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

Secret Santa Fund, Boards' charity that buys christmas presents for kids in hospital? A fiver from each book sold is going to SSF.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

That would be SSF. And what about description of us? Boards.ie members regularly meeting on Photography forum. And just slight description/information about the SSF, that is going to be explained at the end or in the front of the book.

I think the front should be an Introduction to Boards.ie/Photography & SSF

The back page would normally be used as an Index.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,368 ✭✭✭Covey

How about using the back page as an index/contact details.

For instance Pg 17 Howl @ the Moon by Xyz + either email or website details ???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

Covey - who would ask everybody if they want to include their contact details and what contact details? If you want to do so, feel free to do so. however I wouldn't like to be in such list. Not to mention that the blurb software is so dumb, that it would be real problem to fit in 120 lines with three columns.

We are looking for description of this project and the description of SSF that we should recieve soon. And by description of the project, I mean description of the boards.ie, our nice company in photography group and menitoning the SSF and the profit raising price offset €5.00 for each book.

I don't see any problem with including an email or website address. They're generally shortish. It wouldn't be compulsory of course.

Someone buys the book, likes your shot and can't contact you, sounds a bit daft to me.

And I understood we were looking for ideas for the front inside page and the back inside page.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

If anybody wanted to post their contact details, there were three text fields that could have been used.
I don't want to be very pessimistic, however the blurb software is really very dumb. 120 lines would not fit by any means. Try it, if you don't believe me.

Talking about pages - yes, as far as I understood whyulittle's question posted quite few days ago.

There are two free pages, the inside front page and the inside back page.

I'll have a look at the software and see what kind of index is available. Unfortunately though, it's not like using Word where you can put in a table with the exact amount of rows and columns you want.

Also, the template we're using as was voted for, has the person's name down where the page number should go. It could be worked to include the page number and the person's name, just not sure how it'd look. Those who asked to have their website included, that is down beside their name.

Happy to write something for the book about the Santa Strike Force, a bit about Boards and an explanation of the origins of both/either/the book.

Seeing as it's a boards book i think it would be apt to have ''YORE'' at the front and ''MA'' at the back.

    Sorted!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

OK, I've just been looking at the software again. The way the book is set up at the minute, we have two free pages, the inside front page and the inside back page. However, the back page is taken by Blurb's logo. They charge you anything from 6 to 11 dollars per book to have it removed, depending on the size of the book and type of cover etc.

We are still in the 70's of photos submitted, so I presume we will beat the 80 mark. That will bring us into the 81-120 price bracket, and then we can have as many free pages as we want as we will not reach 120.

Hopefully we get to the magic mark.

Here is a paragraph or two that I have thrown together.
This book is a collaborative effort showcasing the work of some of the photographers from the Boards.ie photography forum from the past year. Some of the proceeds of this tome will go to the Santa Strike force charity.

Santa Strike force is a charity that anonymously buys and distributes cool stuff for kids to hospitals and care-centres around Christmas time well just like Santa would.

The boards.ie photography forum is the area of boards.ie that is dedicated to photography and all related topics. The forum is a friendly place where photographers of all abilities and experience levels critique photos, discuss relevant topics and provide advice to each other.

    Sounds good.

Maybe it should be pointed out that submission to the book was open to all on the forum of any experience. The image selected was soley the choice of each participant.

And if you have direct contact to SSF, if anybody wants to donate even more ;-)

I quite like Gandies piece, I dunno if I could do better. I like the Keep It Simple Stupid approach as less is indeed more in this case, plus I like the way its clear that Boards is the glue, not the owner :)

If it hasnt been said already (and there was some discussion about this before), lets make it clear that you grant us the right to reproduce the images in the book and we make no other claim to copyright or any of that nonsense. We (Boards/SSF) are very grateful for the rights to include your image in this book in the first place...

You could put www.santastrikeforce.com in there too perhaps, I will be updating that in the coming days too!

I would say all profits generated, instead of some proceeds, go to SSF. Sounds like we're keeping some for ourselves otherwise.

Also how it's quite an active forum, probably the most active forum on all of boards.ie where the posters regularly meet up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

    Surprise, surprise :-)
I have been banned from one forum today without warning. It only shows that the quality and activity of all forums depends also on their mods. Therefore I would like to thank to all our moderators (former ones including) for keeping this forum in such wondeful spirit.

By the way, about copyright. It hasn't been discussed yet at all. But that could be cruical topic to talk to. So far everybody keeps their full copyrights on their pictures in the book.
DeVore, if you could specify what use did you mean, that would help us to create a form that could be signed on voluntary basis by each stakeholder. I think that is the most democratic way.

For example, if you want to use low-res pictures including watermark of the author, watermark of the boards.ie, watermark of the SSF or the link to SSF. If you want to create banners for interweb or any other electronical use, or if you even want to use the pictures in print. That would have to be specified very precisely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

I've included a line in the book stating all image copyright are retained by their respective owners and are used in the book with their permission, and that they may not be reproduced without their permission.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

whyulittle, could you paste here the description you have so far? Just to get agreement of the majority (ten people...).

© The copyright to all images in this book remain with their respective owner, and images have been reproduced here with their permission. No images may be reproduced by any means, without the express written permission of the respective owner.

Copyright notice could probably do with being cleaned up a bit, and to include the bit about Boards not making any claim to copyright etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

Did we ever decide how the money is going to be given to SSF? Is it part of the price of the book, or are we each to make a €5 donation ourselves?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

Blurb offers a service "Profit raising". You just enter the account number and price of each book will be increased by set value. And that money will be sent to specified bank account.

    Can I make a suggestion:
© The copyright to each image in this book remains with its respective owner, and images have been reproduced here with the owners' permission.
Just a minor edit for grammar and clarity. I haven't done anything about boards.ie and image ownership, but I think the statement itself is quite clear.

ask devore to say something about boards too if you think that would be appropriate. We can add on info about boards photography section
we could always convert the text into a 300dpi image and stick it in that way couldn't we?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

What we have already is only taking up about half a page so far, so plenty of room to expand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

OK so unless we have any last minute objections or suggestions, this is what is going into the book.

Just a minor niggle: the overlap from the first to the second paragraph feels vaguely tautological to my pedantic soul.

    How about:
All profits generated from this tome will go to the Santa Strike Force.

Santa Strike Force is a charity that anonymously...
In the absence of the second paragraph, the trailing "charity" would be needed at the end of the first, but as it stands, I think it's superfluous.
