Went to specsavers got 2 pair of glasses and an eye test came to about €150 after my PRSI. I was looking for sunglasses.

So I used these guys and found them to be good.
You fill in the details of your subscription on the site you can choose tint for free normally €15 in specsavers and you get free antiglare I think its something like 45 euro with specsavers.
Bought 2 pair of glasses in the end and came to $49.36. or €31.82.
The glasses where excellent prescription was spot on but came in an unappealing bag but the glasses are well protected in the outside foam case and cotton woll. You can see it on youtube. Took mine a week to arrive.

Anyway how it works is put Discount Code "One4Me" while checkout to avail the discount.

Aldi are doing reading glasses in various prescriptions (strengths) for €2.99 as well. Far cheaper than either Specsavers or anywhere online, but they've only reading glasses, not distance specs.

Thanks, op, definitely worth a gamble - if it works out, I'll be saving a fortune, my glasses are over 400 yoyos in specsavers due to very high prescription and super thin lenses. Got a set with thin lenses that worked out at 34 euro there. Twas interesting getting hubby to measure the distance between my pupils, apparantly I can't stop moving my eyes

  • Is this for real? Expensive glasses for around €30? I got my current pair ten years ago and they were 250~ punts (very expensive at the time) with the special thin glass because of my poor eyesight. I went to a private optician cos I hate specsavers. Can I really get similar glasses from these guys at such a fraction of the cost! What's the catch?

Also where the hell do I get my prescription for these guys? :)

10 years! Get yourself to an optician!

My last pair cost €400 from vision express, never again.
If you are employed and have a certain number of PRSI contributions you can get a free eye test and glasses from a low price range. Or if you have a medical card you can get the same, go to your optician, whichever one you want ask them for a form they are different for PRSI and medical cards holders, fill it in and send it off. About a week later you should get it back if you qualify. Go to the optician go through the eyetest and whatever. At the end they should give you the details of the exam if not ask. There no catch. I got mine and Im very happy with them. I seen this thread from a year ago...http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055113926

Also heres why its so cheap...
Why are your prices so much less in comparison with other retailers?
Controlled non-production overheads enable us to sell at such prices. Many businesses spend large sums on their advertising and marketing campaigns then transfer those costs to the end consumer. We at Goggles 4 U in contrast exercise a lower profile policy to maintain the low overheads and transfer the savings over to our customers, at the same time maintaining a quality production standard. 80% of our business is generated through word of mouth from our satisfied loyal customers.

Also the glasses are from pakistan.

  • Great! I'd never heard of this before!! I was told 10 years ago that my eyesight had stopped getting worse so that's why I've not been back. The frames on goggles4u look kind of cheap though....are they good quality? Thanks for all your help so far!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,845 ✭✭✭Jet Black

Yeah mine are great. Better then the ones I got from specsavers.

  • Any tips on picking out a frame?? I'm getting a little boggled eyed after going through 600 results....only a thousand to go :(

:) What did you go for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,845 ✭✭✭Jet Black

Well the best thing to do is go to an optician and try on whichever ones you like and suit you. The you can come back and check the site. This is probably the best way as you'll have a better idea of what to get.

I got half rim black glasses. I seen them in specsavers, but only in grey. But I got them here. Just depends on eye shape, head shape and so on.

There is a little ruler you can print out to measure your current glasses then search by size.

Beat me to it OP, fair play to ya. Just got email myself from them. Like OP I ordered 2 sets for 31 euro.
Bought from them a year ago & was so happy with product I bought sunglasses and spares for the wife back then. Service was grand, about a weeks delivery and at 15.50 for a pair of prescription glasses you really can't go wrong! About 4 friends have since purchased from them without any problems.

You should still get your eyes checked once every 2 years, more if you have very bad eyesight. My eyesight hasn't changed in over 10 years either, but the optician says those of us 'blessed' with very poor eyesight are more likely to develop certain eye conditions (don't remember which ones) so it's important to get them checked regularly. Your PRSI should cover them! Then again, she might just want my money :pac:

Cheers for that, even without the discount they were cheep. Just ordered a pair and will very interested in seeing how it goes. Which will be great as I paid 400+ this year for a pair I don't like (shopping for glasses on your own is a bad idea, as you have to take off you spec to try on others but then you are blind).

have bought numerious pairs from them and so have friends and family - They come from pakistan usually takes two weeks tops.

Quality is great and they come extrememly well packed so no chance of damage also come registered post so they wont go missing.

  • Went to my local opticians today about getting an eye test. Can the frames they have for circa €190 by Hugo Boss really be the same quality as goggles4u's frames for a tenner?

Do you honestly believe you're paying that money for quality?? It's for the logo!

Wow, great bargains to be had, thanks for the heads up OP! :)

And am I right in believing that they offer a 15% discount to every repeat order also? Niiice!

With this voucher code for 20% off can it just be used once or can I use it again?

I'm on the verge of ordering a pair or two now, however if I want to order another pay for my mother/father later on today or tomorrow can I use the code again or will it be expired?

Also just wondering if somone who has previously ordered could help me with this..

    I had an eye test done around a month ago and I was told that my prescription was as follows;

    Left Eye: -1.75
    Right Eye: -.75

When I'm ordering do I enter the above under: Sphere or Cylinder?

    rx1.gif

I have a pretty straight forward problem, just a lil short sighted.. not sure whether I enter the above in Sphere or Cylinder though?

Also, which lens material to go for.. CR Material, or plain Glass material? Pros/cons of either?

Or is the polycarbonate worth the extra money?

Just want the glasses for reading, watching tv really..

    Thanks guys! :D

Yeah I think you have to sign up and contact them for the 15%.
The code AFAIK can be used as often as you like within the 72hours.

I just got the plain one, comes with free antiglare valued at €45 in specsavers. Sure you can get the whole lot for the price.

If your not going to be using them all the time is there a point in going for a more expensive pair? Well its really up to yourself.

You may have to contact your optician and ask for the additional details. Shouldn't cost you anything extra as you paid for an eye test and this is the info you need. The one thing my optician hadn't already measured in their standard eye test was my pupil distance.

Check out this section of the Wikipedia entry on corrective lenses: [Link]

I did some research on the materials yesterday and I believe the following information is accurate (someone correct me if I'm mistaken :)):

Glass: can shatter, heavy but has the best acuity. Also most scratch resistant.

CR39/Plastic: more shatter resistant, light, less acuity. Acuity also reduces the thinner/more dense the lens is made (but for most the reduction in acuity over glass is imperceptible, partially thanks to the diameter of modern frames iirc).

Polycarbonate: most shatter resistant, lighter than standard thickness plastics, least acuity. Recommended for use when playing sports. Softest material and most prone to scratching.

    umm, just a note.
If you print out the ruler on normal A4 size paper it isn't accurate:)
I may have been at the paypal stage before I realised this;)

My new speccies arrived today - perfect, I'm seriously impressed. Considering I have really bad eyesight and my last couple of pairs were over 400 yoyos.. Wish I'd bought ones that looked more different to my old ones, though, no-one notices :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 453 ✭✭pandamoanium

I got the two pairs that I ordered yesterday.

The lenses are perfect, really happy with them!

Only one problem though - on one of the pairs I ordered one side is a different colour to the other, like it's been faded by the sun, so I can't really wear that pair, would look very odd with one side a different shade to the other..

Have sent them an email so will see what they say!

Other than that though, very happy with them, thanks OP!

got mine today - frames are as good as any designer frames you'll get in Specsavers or anywhere else - for less than €20 you can't go wrong.
Just went in to try and order sunglasses - site seems to be down hope they're not gone out of business!

They're still going, I've just ordered a pair. Will post back in a week or twos time and see how I got on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭bazwaldo

Bet you to it! I ordered on the 13th and they arrived yesterday (2 weeks later). Well packaged up in a cardboard box. Glasses came wrapped in cotton wool and a cloth all within a glasses case which was bubblewrapped inside the cardboard box. And there was a spare set of those plastic nose pads whatever theyre called and 2 little screws.

The lenses (prescription from vision express which cost €9 more than the glasses:rolleyes:) are spot on. The quality of the specs are good, no different in what you'd see anywhere else.

I found some discount codes which one of them knocked off 5% for me. Don't know which.

    BigSale
    glasses
    LOOKGREAT45
    One4Me

Enter these when paying. I used paypal and total cost was €18. At this price I'll be ordering another. I think you get 15% off if you are a repeat customer too. :)

I've checked online before at various sites and I noticed the pupil distance. My latest perscription does not seem to have it either. I have not checked out this site yet as I am in work but is there a way of checking the pupil distance? (I see people mentioning the ruler you can print)

Good to see people were happy as I was always concerned about buying glasses online and I think those "reading" glasses you can buy in supermarkets etc should be banned. The can't be good for the eyes, can they?

Thanks for the info and nice catch OP

The print out is a waste of time. Just use a ruler or tape measure and stand in front of the mirror with it, or get someone else to measure. Take your time doing it. The site explains how to do it also.
