Annual Leave - forced days

Hi. Our company closes every year on Good Friday. We have never been informed that this should come out of our annual leave or we have never been given the option to work the day. It has now come to light that it is being taken from our annual leave every year. (don't ask me how we missed this previous years) It is in our contracts that we must retain 4 days for the Christmas shutdown but nothing about Good Friday!! Anyone know if this is right or if they decide to close down for the day should it not be taken from annual leave? Thanks!! smile.gif

This is fine, and perfectly legal. Your employer decides when you take your holidays, not you.

Taking Good Friday and Christmas days from annual leave is standard practice in almost every company.

But should we not have been informed that it was being taken from our annual leave? I came into 2008 thinking I had 20 days, turns out I'd 19 because of GF last year and now I'm down another day from GF 2008. Would have been nice to know where we stood beforehand. Seems like a lack of communication to me. Not one of us was aware of this until today.

Your employer decides when you can take your holidays - they are being nice by normally letting you pick and choose your days off.

The only thing you are entitled to (as far as I remember) is two weeks of continuous holidays (and the remaining days spread out in smaller chunks.)

The lack of communication regarding Good Friday is just that - a lack of communication.

It is true, Your boss could have picked your two weeks for you like in other companies!! It was standard in all my previous jobs that these days came out of our annual leave!

Our company gives us 21 days, i.e. 20 + 1 for Good Friday. Out of the remaining 20, we need to keep a certain amount free for Christmas, but we are informed of the opening days a few months in advance.

Your employer can dictate your holidays - maybe you can request that this Good Friday holiday can be written into all future contracts, so that new employees will know exactly what they're getting.
